Reload Request For .308

Hi all, have 26" with 1/10 twist, looking for decent long range loads for the .308, any reload data for long range .308s is appreciated, Im looking to stick with 168gr and looking to try some 175gr SMK.

How long a range?
Anything much over 600 yards, best stick to the 175; which is what I mostly shoot to 1000.

The load, lots of Varget or Reloder 15.

Hey Gunman,

The best load for .308 I've tried so far is a 168gr Sierra Match King on top of 40.7gr-H4895. Primer was Federal 210M (Gold Medal Match) in regular ol' Winchester Brass. OAL-2.8

The WORST group I shot with this load was an honest .75" C-T-C out of a Savage Tactical...the best were in the .4" C-T-C range!

I got this load from Sierra's tech support hotline...they know their stuff! Most of the time their load data is more accurate than the loads I spend hours fine tuning.

41.5gr IMR 4895, FC or Win primer, LC case & 168 SMK

Works great to 600 out of an M1 or M1A. I've shot that load through bolt guns too a little over 500 yards, and it works well there too. Goes subsonic just beyond 600 so groups should be much larger at 700 yards.

The 175 and heavier bullets are supposed to stay supersonic much further. I've never shot any of them from the .308.

I cut the load above back to 39.5 if I am using a c-34 primer because it is a magnum type primer. I get about the same velocities with 39.5 and the c-34 as I would get with 41.5 and a conventional primer.

My savage 10fp likes a 175gr SMK over 45gr of varget and a WLR primer in neck sized winchester brass OAL 2.8, shoots about 1-1.5" on calm days, and not too temp sensitive. Shoots consistently from the first shot in winter to the last of a box of 50 in summer.

45.0 grains of AA2520 with a SMK 168 gr out of my mauser will make damn near anyone look like Daniel Boone.


As far as stick powders go...

45.5 grains of RL-15 is another good paper puncher with the 168 SMK.


BTW, those are the moly coated ones. I haven't started working up loads with the 175 SMK's I just got...like you, I want to find a good, heavy load to play with at 400-500 yards and out.
