Does anybody know a good starting load for reloading 9mm with 147 gr. gold dots using Winchester 231?

Thanks in advance

QuickLoad

Software Says:

4 inch barrel....

3.7 grains (close to max) 989fps
3.6 grains 880 fps
3.5 grains 863 fps
3.4 grains 844 fps
3.3 grains 826 fps

I'd start at 3.5, but that's me and the ones I know are in great shape.

Individual results may vary :D

Win231 doesn't work too well with the 147gr bullet in the 9mm.

I've had my best luck with WinSuperField.
Also had some luck with Accurate #5, and HS-6.
Unique and BlueDot are good. Haven't tried any yet, but I'm told that PowerPistol is excellent, too.

However, when I was experimenting with 147gr bullets,(I don't use them anymore) I used WSF because both of the two companys that loaded ammo I was apt to use if I ran out at a major match also used WSF in their 147gr ammo.

Precison Delta used 4.3gr (in the ones I pulled) before going to a non-cannister grade powder a few years back. Until they went out of business, Anderson Cart. used 4.5gr of WSF. (yes, it's above the data manual max's for non-plusP ammo, but, thats what they used!). Both were using the Hornady 147gr XTP bullet.

Win231 works really well with 115gr loads (shot a LOT myself), but is too fast for the 147gr. Two my three S&W Perf.Ctr autos wouldn't cycle (open, eject, and feed) before the primers started cratering running the risk of sheared off primer metal blocking the firing pin. (Don't snear!, I lost "BIG TIME" at the 1999 NRA PPC Nationals due to bullet set back and stoppage due to Bullseye and a 115gr bullet and Federal primers, witha bullet set back upon feeding. VERY, VERY accurate, but can cause over pressure if bullet sets back on feeding in the very least amount.).
Ever since that episode, I've always used Winchester primers in my 9mm match ammo, and now use WSF in all my 9mm ammo.

Be careful if you use the Win231 in the 9mm. Pay very close attention to loading manuals, and recommended bullets, cases, and OAL. Pressures rise very quickly with the 9mm and fast powders and heavy bullets, especially if the bullets gets set back during the feeding cycle.

GooseGestapo,

I agree. I have not had good luck using the 147 cast lead 9mm projectiles in my pistols. Using published loading data with WW231 (my standard), I either experience failure to cycle due to insufficient pressure or leading of the barrel when I finally get sufficient pressure to cycle the pistol.

I have gone back to 115 FMJ's with WW231 or Ramshot Silhoutte.

What about the 147 g Gold Dots in a Glock 17? Any experience here????
