Just shot my first 45 reloads this weekend and ordered 9mm dies. Now I have another addiction thanks to 1911 Tuner. What bullet/powder combo is money effecient in 9mm.I thought about loading 125 gr lrn,but open for suggestions. In reality I'd like to load a jacketed a bullet, but can get lead 23.00 for a 1000.What are some good loads in 9.

Try local first, no shipping

I'd start with your retailer and go from there. You don't pay shipping from your local plink-n-shoot suppliers. I personally want to move to a plated bullet to reduce lead exposure, but the lead offerings are so cheap I just can't pass them up when a round takes a few minutes each to make, and only milliseconds to expend

That said, I'd look at one of the leading threads in this portion of the forum on reloading economics. I saw a link list in there that was huge. Good place to start. I think there's enough to surf on that topic for a week solid.

Then I'd look on gunbroker.com. They have good deals once in a while if you keep looking. Just like ebay, but for firearms and accessories in case you don't already know about it. Please follow up on this thread, I'm doing the same thing right now. But my new progressive setup I purchased (used) is missing $12 in parts for it's function. RCBS only stuff, have to wait. I'll post some loadings when I get it up and running to share experience with 9mm costs and my rcbs piggyback. Can't find much info on my specific reloader here on the threads either. Hope that means it works fairly well.

I shoot 115grn FMJ with Titegroup. The 115grn FMJs are fairly inexpensive. You can get 1000 rounds of Winchester 115grn FMJ flat base for $49.10 from here. I've ordered from him a number of times with no problems (his prices have gone up $3 with the new year). Check out my topic Where is the best buy for 9mm bullets? for some good leads. I'm thinking of trying those Precision Bullets myself.

I load 115grn FMJ with 4.3grn of Titegroup (recipe from memory; do not use without confirming!). That's about 1135fps according to the charts. I like Titegroup because it's clean, accurate, and strong stuff (smaller charges = more rounds per pound). I've also used Power Pistol to good effect.

One concern about lead bullets; my understanding is that when you push them much over 1000fps you're going to get signifigant amounts of leading in the barrel. Trying to get the leading out of the barrel officially "SUCKS". :p

23 per k is going to be tough to beat. check estate sales. sometimes you get great deals on FMJ / jacketed components there. i stocked up on a bunch for 2$/100 from a guy online who bought a poop load from an estate sale. (to bad he sold out i'd buy another 5 k if i had more cash)

Check the sales flyers...and website...for Midway. I've bought FMJ Rem and Winchester for very little more that that... I've also loaded a lot of plated 115-gr bullets, but you have to bell the case mouths for them the same as for lead bullets. Not necessary with FMJ...

I use #231 for everything from 9-mm Mak to .45 Colt, so I buy in bulk...and save a lot of space, besides not having to worry about having the wrong powder in the measure. (Similarly, I use milsurp #4895 for everything from 223 NATO to .30-06.)

Most of my reloading of 9MM is with 125 cast LRN but sometimes load 124 gr jacketed if I catch them on sale. Those weights seem to be more accurate in my Ruger pistol. If I understood you can get lead bullets for $23 per 1000 that's a darn good price. As far as leading the barrel, I've never used the softer swaged bullets but you can push cast bullets pretty fast in some guns without a lot of leading but I personally would keep the velocities on the moderate side. I also like 231 powder and use a lot but also like AA5 and AA7 in 9MM.

I used to load cast 124 grain truncated-cone bullets in 9mm . . . IIRC the powder charge was 4.5 grains of 700-X (check that charge in a manual first - I don't go just by memory, and you shouldn't go just by my memory, either! ;) ) and the load was clean, accurate, and cheap, since at the time I was buying 700-X in 12 lb. kegs for shotgun reloading.

But since 9mm became cheap, I haven't reloaded it; for plinking or practice ammo, it just isn't worth my time (even with a progressive press) when I factor in policing the brass, sorting it, inspecting it, cleaning it, etc.

When I ran the numbers, and factored everything in, I found that I ended up "paying" myself considerably less than minimum wage.

At the local shows valiant has cast 125 lrn for 23.00 1000 for 9mm,they have 230 lrn for 45 for 36.00..I just didn't know how bad the lead bullets would lead the barrel. They'll be shot in a cz,an xd and a friends blackhawk. If I could find some decent fmj reasonable local I'd buy em.The loads seem to vary a fair amount from one manual to another too.

I cast my own 124 lrn (lee 124TL) and load them w/ 3.0 grn of Bullseye in fullsize SA 9mm w/10lb recoil spring. Kills the hell out of them steel plates too.

Midway has jacketed 9-mm bullets on sale...Rem 124-gr FMJ for $22/500, 124-gr JHP for $23/500, Win 115-gr FMJ for $22/500, 115-gr JHP for $21/500!! Check their on-line catalog...I don't think I got them mixed up! That's cheaper than either lead or plated...:D
