All,

I have a couple of questions regarding storage of reloading components:

1. How long is powder good for if kept in a dry location after the original seal has been broken?

2. Is there any negative impact on powder or primers stored in a garage cabinet even though it can get above 90 degrees in the summer time?

3. Should primers be stored any different from powder? If so, how?

I am very interested in correct storage of these components for a long period of time. I want to purchase a bunch of components now while they are cheaper and store for several years.

Thanks!!

I keep my powder and primers inside in the a/c, but I have shot stuff that was setting in a barn for years. Look at all the 50 year old surplus ammo for sale. You can bet all the overseas storage wasn't the best. Keep it dry and cool as possible.

Best to store powder and primers in a constantly cool environment, out of direct sunlight. The high temp swings in an unheated garage is not good. A basement of a house is perfect.

Reloading components last many decades, when stored properly. Temperature extremes and moisture are to be avoided.

Primers and powder have similar requirements, I would not store either in a garage.

I am currently using an inherited batch of Hi-Vel #2 powder from ~1951. Works great in 30-06. The primers I bought in the 70s all work fine.

I recently loaded some unique powder that has to be 25 years old that I purchased from a dealer. They packaged from bulk in a plastic lined brown paper bag with roll down top. Every shell, loaded with this powder and 20 plus year old primers go boom, just keep dry and cool, it should be fine.

Temperature swings can lead to condensation which is bad.

I offer you the same advice I gave people when I sold acoustic guitars and drums: Do not keep them in a climate you would not keep your child in for an extended amount of time.

Humidity and temps are both concerns.
