I recently purchased some bullets from Rocky Mountain Reloading & I could use some help figuring out a Bullseye or Red Dot load for .45 230 Gr. RMR Hardcore Match Round Nose Plated .452

I noticed I needed to OAL them around 1.230 which passed my plunk test they chamber and extract well at this length.

as to the loading data I'm still trying to find a good load before I try shooting them. A friend of mine recommended around 5.2 to 5.5 Bullseye any help or suggestions would be appreciated ty.

My go to is 5.0 Bullseye for 230gr plated. Always cycle my slides and is soft shooting. However, my OAL is 1.267. Since 5.0gr is mid-range going 1.23 OAL should be ok but, as always, start low and work up.

Welcome to THR.

With RMR HM 230 gr RN, 1.230" worked well for SA/Citadel 1911 but I needed to use 1.200" for my Sig 1911 - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=761471

Alliant lists 5.1 gr as max charge for 230 gr lead RN and I have used lead load data for plated bullets with good results. I have used 4.0 gr of Red Dot/Promo for 200/230 gr lead/plated bullets with good results. Since you are using shorter than published 1.270" OAL, how about trying 4.0 gr and incrementally work up from there?

Here's Alliant load data - http://www.alliantpowder.com/reload...owderlist.aspx&type=1&powderid=4&cartridge=35
45 Auto 230 gr Speer LRN Red Dot OAL 1.270" Max 5.1 gr (841 fps)

BTW, here's chrono data for 4.2/4.4/4.6/4.8/5.0 gr Red Dot with 230 gr RN plated bullet @ 1.265" for reference (using shorter OAL will produce higher velocities) - http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=195257&p=2244488

Thanks for your reply I appreciate the fps stats as well =) do you have any information as to how I can determine the use of a shorter OAL around 1.230 and how much higher velocities it will produce

We could only make an educated guess as different bullets, barrel lengths, etc. will affect muzzle velocities.

You would need to use a chrono to be sure.

I agree with bds. Since you're quite a bit shorter than recommended start with 4.0 red dot and work up. I wouldn't go over 5, personally. I generally load 4.7ish at 1.260". But plunk and feeding tests will differ for you of course.

Same here 5.0 Bullseye (back in the day when I had some on hand!) Got good groups and never saw a reason to go beyond that. Seated mine a pinch longer at 1.275

Well I decided to grow a pair and try the rounds at 5.2 Bullseye at a col of 1.225-1.230 with a very light factory crimp my barrel size in my 1911 is 5" the rounds shot pretty well it didn't seem like it was over charged but I didn't compare any factory loads with them at the time I will do that in a few days and let you guys know what I discover. I'd also like to say TY again to everyone who has helped in figuring this out and sharing your load data this really is a great community of Reloaders. Please feel free to keep adding more information on this if you wish all information is useful.

I, like BDS have had good luck with 4 gr of Promo. (Red Dot). I have also used 4.1 and 4.4 of Bullseye. Tough call but 4.4 seemed to shoot a little better for me.

My data, from my loads, on my equipment, and my gun. YMMV. Start low and work up.

Here are the loads I tried with Red Dot and the RMR Hardcore Match 230gn (formerly known as "Thick Plated").

Winchester large pistol primer, COL 1.200". Shot from a 4.5" barrel.

4.5gn, 769.0fps, 13.2sd, 35spread. 1.5" @ 10 yards, offhand
4.7gn, 800.4fps, 8.3sd, 22spread. 1.2" @ 10 yards, offhand

I had two more higher charges to test, but 800fps was my velocity limit. ;)

I was VERY pleased with the accuracy of this load. At some point I may go back and start at a lower charge and try again.

for bds: I had the same problem with a Sig 1911. Very short chambers... I'm having a gunsmith friend increase the leade a bit so I can chamber longer rounds without whacking into the rifling.

Like Missouri 9mm 124 gr RN (SmallBall), I don't see it as a "problem" but a bullet with greater accuracy potential due to longer bullet base/bearing surface.

Yes the almost no leade and quick start of rifling with tight chamber forces you to be more consistent with your reloads but sometimes "tight" is good. ;)

updated result

Well I had a chance to compare my 5.2 bullseye rounds at 1.225ish rmr hardmatch round nose 230s to some factory winchester rounds my reloads feel very close but maybe just a little stronger so I'm going to knock it down to 5.0 bullseye and try that. :)

.45acp 230gr RMR Match plated RN
Red Dot 1.264 OAL
Remington 1-1/2 LPPs
also used CCI 300 LPPs, no difference.
4.0gr soft shooting revolver loads
4.6 medium all-around works in all my semiautomatic pistols
5.2 feels like commercial SD loads (worked up to this--no issues)
The above are for info only--use at your own risk.
I highly recommend Red Dot.
