A few years back, I bought a box of Speer 180 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullets. I believe that Speer had just purchased the rights to produce the bullet. At the time I also purchased the Speer reloading manual #13, due to the erroneous assumption that it would address the bullet. Unfortunately it did not address it, and apparently Speer stopped making it. I did not attempt to reload any of them at that time.
I plan on using this bullet in my 300 win mag for an upcoming elk hunt. I realize that I can use a starting load for another 180 grain bullet and work up carefully. But there are only 25 in the box and they were very pricey.
I have a few questions, and would appreciate any help you can give.
1 Does anyone have a pet load for this bullet in 300 win mag ? Powder which I have available are Reloader 22, H4831SC, IMR 4831, IMR 4350. The rifle is a bolt action Browning that can safely shoot any max load I
2 Is there another normally priced bullet that shoots to the same point of impact as the Bear Claw with a similar load? This would be used to get my scope zeroed and practice.
3 I also have a box of the old style Barnes X-bullets (no grooves in the shank). Does anyone have experience with both bullets and a preference for bull elk at up to 300 yards.
Thanks Frank
