I have a Rem 597, .22LR. Having noticed a few things that I could improve on, I did replace the hammer and extractor with the Volquartzen ones suggested by various people. I still need to clean up the mags, put a stronger spring in them, but I keep getting an occasional failure to re-cock the gun when firing.
This has happened prior to my replacing the hammer, so it's not just something that has occurred since my work on the gun. Occasionally, after a shot, a new round will chamber, but the hammer will not reset. The guide rods are smooth, no noticeable burrs, smooth action all the way back. Today I noticed that I can actually lock the bolt back without having the hammer being locked into place. I didn't think to check that before I replaced the hammer.
Is this caused simply by weak ammo? Or is there something else going on? I have heard something about trimming the rubber bumper in the back a bit to help, but I don't know if that actually is the problem.
