picked up a rem 700 in 223 and trying to find what model it is.It has a 24 " hvy bbl flat bottem cammo stock but the cammo is not the mossy oak but a greenish woodland color.Looked on the rem site but found no pics of it there.Dont know the bbl twist but it will not shoot a 62 gr bullet, hits the paper sideways.the stock has 3 side vents on each side and has a place to attach a bipod on it.Nothing on the bbl except rem arms in 223.The gun feels real heavy maybe 8 or 9 lbs.Any idea what I have?

Call Remington customer service, they can tell you about it by serial number. The stock sound like an SPS Varmint type.

I can tell you from a Remington 700 barrel that I have they are generally a 1:12 twist. Mine is very accurate right up to overall 55 grain bullets but anything much above 55 grain in my rifle forget it. Mine was a conversion from a Remington maybe 725? Traveling so I don't have the rifle here to look at. Originally it was a 222 Remington. The barrel was off a Remington 700 VSSF in 223.

Did you buy this rifle new in box or is it possible the stock was changed before you got it?

My 700 in .223 is like Ron's. 1:12 twist and won't shoot anything above 55 gr. Some 52 gr a-max I loaded though! They are a lot more accurate than I am. Zero issue hitting bowling pins at 300 yards.

Everytime I get a Remington rifle I call Remington to see what I really have. You might find out something you didn't know. Turns out a 700 in 30-06 that I just got used to be a 300 WM.

Sounds like it might be an aftermarket stock.

Looks like I got a bad one,rem said to send it back.Depending on what I find out about turnaround time I'll make up my mind what to do with it.Back to dealer or to rem.I only got it yesterday.

Was apprehensive about returning my remington. The website did not track my rifle, so was worried they wouldn't get to it for some time. Was quoted 3 weeks on the phone. Shipped on Wednesday. Got a return shpping notice the next week on Tuesday that was being sent back. Received the following Monday. They sent the rifle to a repair center in KY. Less than 2 weeks from time I dropped off at UPS center to back on my porch.

The Remington Safety Warning And Recall Notice.

Keep in mind what rifles are subject to recall.
PRODUCTS: Remington Arms Company, LLC (“Remington”) is voluntarily recalling Remington Model 700™ and Model Seven™ rifles with X-Mark Pro® (“XMP®”) triggers, manufactured from May 1, 2006 to April 9, 2014.

The above link explains in detail how to determine if a rifle is subject to the recall. It's worth a read for those who may suspect they have an affected rifle.

How to determine the rate of twist:

Take a cleaning rid and put a patch on it. Run it into the barrel, making sure it is engraving into the rifling well. Then make a reference mark on the rod and barrel, a small piece of tape, or a sharpie magic marker will work. Then run the cleaning rod into or out of the barrel until the mark on it determines it has rotated on complete and exact revolution. Pull the rod out and measure the distance between the starting point and where it completed one full rotation, that is your rate of twist. If the distance from point A to to point B is 12" it has a 1-12 ROT, and so on. Simply put, the distance the rod travels to complete one full rotation is your ROT.

Once you know the ROT you can load or buy the bullets that are designed for that ROT.
