Wierd idea here, but I’m thinking through a rifle rebuild. It’s my first centerfire rifle so it has some sentimental value as is in .270 win but I’m not opposed to changing the chambering when I rebarrel it. Specifically I’m considering rechambering it to a 7-08. There are 7-08 barrels about so I could buy one of those without going to the expense of a custom barrel. If I put a mag block in the front of the blind magazine on my rifle then that means a full stroke would be required to feed the next shell, but a 3/4 stroke would eject without feeding which is a desirable situation for me. Has anybody done such, and if so how do you like the results?

If you’re using a blind mag, use a short action mag box and follower, then block BEHIND the box in the stock (add an extended bolt stop if you so desire).

You don’t want extra, unnecessary cartridge travel in the feed cycle, place the rounds closer to the barrel, not farther away.

ETA: Ejection always happens before the bolt would pick up the next round, so a shooter can stall pick up of the next round if so desired - and of course, even if you DO cycle fully rearward, a quick poke of the finger through the port can help clear the next round instead of picking up.

I believe Savage actually did this on factory rifles here and there.

I personally know of a few folks who have built 450 BM rifles on long action Rem 700 actions. The 450 is an AR length cartridge and thus, a bit shorter yet than a 7mm-08 or similar 308 based short action cartridge.

The thing that is interesting about M700 long actions is the long magazine - 3.65 in..

Tailor-made for long seated high BC bullets and deep throated chambers for standard length cartridges.
