I am tryin to remove a barrel from a 788 and the action keeps slipping in the wrench. I tried installing the 1/4-28 bolt into it and it just shears off a soft hardware bolt.(was careful not to tigten it into the tennon).
How much of the turning torque should or does this little bolt provide?
I cant bring myself to thread a hard bolt in there for fear of action damage, but is that the answer?

Beats me.
Some years ago, I sent a 788 in to Remington for a new barrel. (I wondered why anybody would display a gun at a gun show with a dirty bore. Now I know; ring and rust. Wonder where he got corrosive .223.)

Anyhow, when I got it back I found it had a different serial number. They had not changed the barrel, they had just replaced the whole barreled action!

I am trying my best not to give up and cut the tennon out in the lathe. However that is a last resort option lol

Make a set of shims out of aluminum to fill the gap.
Soda can to sheet mettle and the fill/fit does not have to be perfect.
Hope this helps

Get some powdered rosin at a sports store and use it on the action wrench.

That generally stops slipping problems.

As usual, rc has the correct answer. I use brass inserts in my action wrench and plenty of rosin. The 788 receiver is thick and very stiff, put some real torque on the action wrench bolts. It won't hurt the action.
I am assuming that you have used plenty of Kroil on the barreled action prior to trying to remove the barrel? Also, Remington used some type of thread glue on some rifles so a little heat might do the trick.
If all else fails, a relief cut with a parting tool at the recoil lug will relieve the torque.
