Rem 788 bolt (GA)

Can anyone tell me if a 308 bolt will interchange with a 243 bolt in a 788. If so are there any adjustments that need to be made or just stick it in and start shooting?

I bought a 243 and found that the bolt had 308 engraved on it. Gives me concern for the safety factor.

The 243 bolt should work with a 308 rifle, but you need to check headspace to be sure. Order a NO GO gage and make sure the bolt won't close on it with very light finger pressure. $20 NO GO gage
That $20 is the cheapest insurance you can buy.

Be gentle with the 788 bolt. Lots of 788 bolts have been broken by guys trying to hot-rod the loads. When the pressure is too high and the bolt sticks, they hammer on the bolt handle, breaking it off. Stick with reasonable loads and it won't happen to you.

Thanks, I will check the headspace. I assume someone was shooting this rifle before I bought it, but I can't be sure. Better safe than sorry!
