Does anyone have personal experience with the Remington 870 SPS 20ga Deer Gun? It has a 18.5" barrell, a black synthetic stock with R3 recoil pad, and a weaver scope mount. Could this shotgun be used for home defense?

Absolutely.
Many people who have problems with recoil use the 20 gauge for HD.

You'd probably what to use some type of standard sights, not a scope.

At the typical ranges of true home defense, the "bad guy" won't know the difference between a load of 20 gauge buckshot and a load of 12 gauge buckshot.

As I recall, there is actually little real difference between a 3" Magnum 20 gauge shell and a standard 2 3/4" 12 gauge, if you want to increase over and beyond standard shells in the 20.

I was thinking of a CQB Red Dot or Holo sight to mount on that weaver rail.

Does Remington (or any 3rd party) make a mag tube extension for 870's in 20ga?

Also being a shotgun newbie, what effect does a rifled choke have on buckshot?

Rifled barrels and chokes do nasties to shot patterns, including buck. Otherwise, the piece itself would serve nicely for HD in trained hands.
