Well OK I cheated... I have a book called "Those Great Cowboy Sidekicks" by David Rothel, and it's great for this kind of question.

Mr. Rothel documents the following sidekicks for William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy):

George "Gabby" Hayes, Russell Hayden, Jimmy Rogers, Al St. John, Andy Clyde, Rand Brooks, and Britt Wood.

Connors . If you have Me TV you can see Hopalong Cassidy on sat and sun mornings 8 am to 9 am.

Several years ago a band called The Amazing Rhythm Aces did a song called King of the Cowboys, in which they sang "You told the truth/You were always ready/Whether with your gun or with your hands/It was lies but I never knew it/You taught me how to act like a man/Say goodbye to the King of the Cowboys...". I have it in my head that they were singing about Hopalong Cassidy, but I'm not sure.

Iggy, Thanks, that is a fantastic story!! I am a Lone Ranger fan.

Also Hoppy. My favorite sidekicks were Lucky and California.

I'm just a hair too young for Hopalong, but I do remember watching Roy Rogers & The Lone Ranger.

A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty Hi-Yo Silver! The Lone Ranger! ... With his faithful Indian companion Tonto, the daring and resourceful masked rider of the plains led the fight for law and order in the early western United States! Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice! Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear! From out of the past come the thundering hoofbeats of the great horse Silver! The Lone Ranger rides again!

Hi-ho Silver, away!

It was Roy Rogers that was billed as "The King of the Cowboys" and Dale Evans (his wife) as the "Queen of the Golden West."

While I'm to young to have seen the six gun heroes on the big sliver screen, I did grow up watching them on VHS. Roy was my favorite although Hoppy was right up there. Fun fact in the 1950's Western author Louis L'amour ghostwrote four or five Hopalong Cassidy novels which can now be found under his own name, and to keep it gun related one of them talked about Hoppy switching from a Sharps .50 to a Winchester as a saddle gun.

Funny how times have changed. I was at that school from 1st through 4th grade. I had a rifle to play with at school back then. .43 Egyptian cal Remington Rolling block carbine.

Somebody would have a dung hemmorage if that showed up today.

My dad gave me a pocket knife when I joined the Boy Scouts in 1972.
I carried that knife (or its replacements) until airport security reminded me how dangerous it was.

Now I carry a gun instead.

Great thread here! I have a Hoppy lunch box that I used as a kid. Spent many hours watching and listening to Hoppy and the Lone Ranger. Here's a song by Roger Miller paying tribute to Hoppy. Hope you enjoy it.

Then one day my folks sent a note with me asking the teacher to send me home at noon.
They took me to town and I met the Lone Ranger.

He gave me a silver bullet and from then on I was the Lone Ranger at recess time. Still got the bullet.

Imagine the reaction if a Movie/TV actor was handing out bullets or even fake bullets to kids today, oh the horror! If he took to it school the school would go on lock down and news helicopters would be circling the building. I miss the old days.

Unfortunately I remember this stuff from the first time around. On second thought…I should be grateful that I do remember it. Now how about Bobby Benson and the B Bar B Riders, Sky King and Sergeant Preston?

...and sending in cereal box tops to get the decoder ring...
