A friend and I tore down his fairly new 1100 for a good cleaning. Everything was pretty straight forward. Upon re assembling and test firing (target loads which is only what he uses) the first box of shells "stove piped" about 1 out of every 3 or 4 shells. The fired shell would hang up in the ejection port half in/half out. On the 2nd box , it was almost every one.
What did we put back together wrong? Or did we oil something we shouldnt have? Gun worked great until we got our hands on it..lol...any advice appreciated. thankyou

Did you lube it well after you cleaned it??

Mine needs to be lubricated well after cleaning..

hi, thanks for the response. As far as lubing goes, a real light coat of oil was put on the surfaces that we thought needed it. Im beginning to wonder if we put on some part/area that wasnt supposed to be? I will have him make sure the gas ports on the barrel are cleaned also.

Definitely check the o-ring. If you forgot to put it back on or damaged it that will definitely cause problems.

You can also get o-rings from a place like Ace Hardware. Slightly different material, so it might not last as long but they are like 30 cents each, buy a few. I've been using one on my 1100, probably put a couple hundreds through it with the o-ring, no problems. I'll edit this with the size o-ring if I can find it. EDIT: Size 21 is 15/16" I.D. X 1 1/16" O.D. X 1/16" thick. It is listed in the thread below.

thanks everyone for replying.
The shells were factory winchester AA trap loads. 1 1/8, 7 and 1/2 shot.
He also tried some reloads I gave him that ive been using for years. 700x/ 7 1/2 shot, #28bushing in my mec loader.
Exhibited the same problem. And we were so careful in dissassebling and re assembling it...Murphys law...I wont get back to his place for another 2 weeks to tear it down again. I want to give him some easy things to look at prior to me getting back to his place...

PS to my above post.
Although the simple(hopefully) cure points to a defective gas seal O ring, my question to all who answered is this...What or How did i damage the gas seal ring by simply sliding it out of its detent position , off the gun and sliding it back on to its indent position 20 minutes later? Is simply removing it for the first time enough to "stretch" it out and not make it function properly? thanks again...

They wear out, and some carbon makes up the differance.

Also, carbon build-up may damage it when the barrel is removed for cleaning.

It has always been the weakest link in the 1100 design.

It pays to keep a few on hand in the cleaning gear.

A friend and I tore down his fairly new 1100 for a good cleaning.

New gas system design then.

Just me, not a fan of this new design, prefer older one.
We run 500 rds without cleaning and the OLD "O" rings lasted a l-o-n-g time.
Hi round counts, fast, shooting skeet, and others shooting trap.

I "would have" guessed the problem being Win Promo target loads, as these are giving everyone fits, no matter the gun.

New Gun, check the ports, make sure "finished out" and no "protruding burrs" as we have seen in some new 1100s. [QC - ain't it great now-a-days?]

Check that newfangled gas system for burrs, and smooth.
Take a Blue magic marker, and do the inside of system in blue.
Some wear is normal, that which is not, will show on the rubbed off blue marker.
Use this to assist in finding what needs attending to.

New fangled gun lubes and solvents *sigh*.
Some of this new stuff is NOT good for rubber, (or anything else, other than wallet flushes).

Hot soap and water cleans those "O" rings.
Going back to when the earth was flat and this Came out, came out, Dexcron Automatic Transmission was found to be the ticket for Semi-Auto shotguns, and Auto Trans have rubber seals, gaskets and the like in them too...

ATF stinks, some get allergic reactions to ATF , so

Rem-Oil was not even a invented back when...
Browning Gun oil in a Tin Can, [ what I used] , Hoppe's Lubrication oil worked fine and dandy, as did Ballistol.
Later Kleenbore Formula 3.[I used this , still do ]
Oh, LSA worked/ still works.

Hoppe's No. 9 or Mineral Spirits cleans just fine.

Don't rub fingers opposite port, that "rail" is razor sharp

Stove pipe sounds like another problem, the targets loads used , should not be the cause, being in spec and having the "oomph" to run the gun.

Was the buttstock messed with? Factory has been known of late to screw up Recoil spring in there that up of late...

That QC thang going on ya know...

FWIW my '74 SX1, with "O" rings still going strong with 300,000 thru it.
My old 1100 with over 200,000 rds still churning and burning too...
Mine are not the only ones of these guns either.

<kicks rock, newfangled designs and all>

Alkazoo; be very careful when you remove and replace the o-ring,,,,sliding it over the threads at the end of the magazine tube could slice the side of the o-ring and cause it to leak,,,when it leaks it don't work and gas gets past it,,, no seal----no ejection

if the gun was working fine and THEN YOU CLEANED it ,,,and now it don't work,,,,,well take a good look at the o-ring for a slice in the side

my .02

thanks to all who replied!!
Im getting to know a 1100 WAAAYYYYY to much more then i want too.lol.
Next weekend when i get back to my friends, we will tear it down and with new O ring in hand, replace and keep fingers crossed everything works ok. I did talk to him last night on the phone and he mentioned he shot 10 rounds thru it on sunday and his target loads ejected, but wouldnt cycle the 2nd round into the chamber...HUH? oh oh here we go again..lol.

The 1100s that have the two part piston can be reassembled many, many wrong ways. I'm not sure, but I think the newer ones have the 1187 style piston that is one piece, which means it is much harder to put together wrong, though still possible. If it faces the wrong way, it won't work. Check the owner's manual. Sweeney's Gunsmithing Shotguns has good info.

Sometimes it is helpful to lube everything the gas pushes on, but don't get it in the mag tube! Some lubes and cleaners will eat the cheap plastic follower that comes with the 1100 and you'll have to replace it with a metal one.

If it will not eject the shell "after cleaning" I suspect that the sealing rings were installed improperly. I've read of the O-ring going bad many times........... My PERSONAL experience is that they last damn near forever! I've shot a lot of skeet with several 1100s. Maybe you did cut or pinch the O-ring upon reassembly. I guess it's possible.
It's also my personal observation that 1100s balk when UNDER lubricated.
