I bought a used 1100 at a gunshow a few years back, I've put a 100 or so shells through it, but last time out I was shooting skeet and had two shells loaded, fired second shell and recoil felt different and didn't eject, went to clear chamber and could not open the bolt. I had to remove the barrel to get the spent shell out,(does not come apart very easy) put it back together and still locked up. everything inside seems to still be in place I'm thinking the barrel is wore out but that is just a guess, any ideas?

Thanks
Vince

I don't know what is wrong with it, but a worn out barrel is not it.
The barrel will not wear out over the life of the gun itself.
Are you saying it won't open even when empty?
Or only after firing a shell?

I would check for severe carbon fouling of the gas piston.

See if the action will operate easily by hand with the barrel off.
DO NOT press the bolt release with the barrel off.

If it won't operate with the barrel off, you could have a badly rusted action spring & tube inside the stock.
I'd pull the stock off and look at that.

I had an 1100 that wouldn't lock open when empty. I couldn't find anything wrong with it.

I gave it a THOROUGH cleaning and it never had the problem again - but I NEVER found a hung-up part or anything. It didn't even seem particularly dirty. It seems a little bit of debris from a twig or something can really jam the thing up.

Before all else, clean everything. The trigger group, the buffer spring (take the buttstock off), the magazine, the gas ports.

If you've done that, I don't know.

There are leaf springs inside, held in place by smooshed steel tabs. They can come loose and cause problems.

If someone has an 1100 and it works, he will insist that it's a flawless shotgun. IMO if you REALLY have to fix something, you'll sell the POS as soon as it works well enough to sell.:)

Remingtons, laws and sausages: you don't want to know how any of them are made.:D

RE: rcmodel
It won't open at all, if I pull the barrel off the bolt will move all the way back like it is suppose to, seems it's locked onto the barrel, which I thought it may be the barrel. guess I may have to send it to remington to get this one sorted out.
Thanks

It may well be a loose part that's retained against the inside of the receiver per my post above. It seems unlikely that the barrel could do this -- unless it's the gas system. Have you checked to see if it's really the gas system that's locked in there, not the bolt?

Obviously, if the gas system is jammed, the bolt won't move either.

Sending it to Remington is probably your best option if it is a spring held against the inside of the receiver by a mashed metal tab. I've worked on said problem, and it's not something you can do with ordinary tools.

But... what about the gas system?

Take the barrel off, remove the hand guard/fore end then put the barrel back on. try to work the action while watching the moving parts around the mag tube. Try to see if you can see anything binding up or stuck.

If it were me I'd take the barrel off and the trigger assembly out. You'd then have a clear view of the insides. If you can move the bolt without moving the piston & action arms the bolt is off its carrier. Are the action arms in their slots at the front of the receiver? My guess is the arms/carrier assembly has "jumped the tracks". Also check to see if the split-leg "T" buttstock spring depressor is still connected to the Spring and riding properly on the rails.

OK, looks like I may have found the issue, the lock block is not filly disengaging from the barrel extension. So I guess its off to Remington to see what can be done. Thanks for all the reply's and advise.

If it locks up only with the barrel on it clean the carbon out of the inside of ring shaped area attached to the barrel where the gas ring operates.

It was the breech bolt return plunger, it was bent down and not allowing the lock block to disengage. $23.80 in parts from numrich"s and she's good as new.
