I just picked up a Uberti 1858 Navy 36 cal. Anyboy have an opinion on what ball diameter to use? Also if you cast your own what brand mold are you using?
Thanks

Uberti chambers are generally right at .373 so you should be good to go with
.375 diameter.
I've had good luck with the Lee molds

Uberti chambers are so close to .375 that the ball isn't really tight enough, particularly if it is a Hornady ball. The Speer balls are more uniformly round. I use .380 balls, and they work much better. I've had .375 balls pull from recoil, or even come back out on the rammer.

I've had .454 balls too loose in Uberti 44's as well, and now use .457.

That's not been my experience but I guess the best bet is to check your chamber diameter and get the appropriate size ball. No sense going a whole lot larger as it just makes it more difficult to load and strains the rammer. Once it's in the chamber it's that size no matter what size it started out. I do agree that the Speer balls are more consistant in size to that stated on the label.

I just went to the Uberti website and under the FAQ they list what size balls to use.

What size ball do I use in my revolver?
.31 caliber revolvers use a .330 ball.
.36 caliber revolvers use a .380 ball.
.44 caliber revolvers use a .454 ball.
