I heard that uberti makes the best 1858 remington replicas. I also heard that Cimmaron goes a step further by cherry picking the ubertis they import so to speak by holding uberti to tighter tolerances than other importers. would a cimmaron/uberti 1858 remington revolver be a good purchase? will it stand up to frequent use? do the ubertis handle conical bullets with accuracy or should i stick to round balls? im not sure weather i'll be getting a 36 or 44 caliber gun yet but i'd like to know what y'alls opinions are regarding my questions and i'd love to get some feedback from those who own cimmaron/uberti 1858's.

I can't answer your question about Chiappas, but there are plenty of guys who regularly shoot Pietta and Uberti 1858s (as well as their other BP pistols) and the guns function quite well. Many even shoot them in Cowboy Action matches. Make no mistake about it, these Italian replicas are no toy guns - they are real guns and usually shoot like it. Most 1858s don't like conical bullets, from what I've read. They'll shoot conicals but not as accurately as round balls. My Pietta 1858 is every bit as accurate with round ball as my New Vaquero is with handloads.

One comment about the .36 vs .44. Unless you can find a Euroarms or an old Uberti, the .36 will be the same size as the .44, which means it will be heavier than the .44. I would handle before buying.

Also, nowadays, it seems that Pietta and Uberti are on par as far as quality. However, Pietta makes their grip frame a little bigger than Uberti, so try to handle them both before you buy. You might find that Pietta's grip frame fits your hand better than Uberti's. I don't know what Chiappas are going for, but if you settle for a plain Uberti, the best price anywhere for new is right here: http://www.jarnaginco.com/confedcatframe.html . C&D Jarnagin, BTW, is a very reputable company, well known for their excellent goods and services in the CW Reenacting world.

I wonder if Cimmaron isn't the company you heard mention of cherry picking ?
Chiappa as far as I know has never had percussion arms . Chiappa cherry picking would also be something out of the norm for them as it seems only about half to 3/4 of the people are pleased with what they offer .

The OP must mean Cimarron. If so, I haven't noticed a difference between Cimarrons and generic Ubertis, as far as quality goes. In fact, a Cimarron 1861 Navy I once owned arrived NIB with a bent loading lever. That's not exactly "cherry picking."
