Remington 1911 r1... opinions?

I have the R1 Enhanced. I had a couple of FTF's in the first 200 rounds but that may have been my fault for running it dry. I cleaned and lubed it and it has been flawless for the last 500 rounds. Very accurate and gave me the 1911 bug. I don't love the fiber optic front sight, but I am going to try a new color. Tempted to pick up one of the demo guns at the local shop for $400 but really can't justify another one already.

I have mixed feelings about the R1.

I've noticed that there is a lot of variability from gun to gun as far as quality of the finish of the frame. Mine is ok, but it was the forth example I looked at be fore I was willing to buy. The black oxide finish is nice as are the grips.

The Remington mags work well as do Wilson Combat and McCormack Shooting Stars. Standard 7 round Metal Forms will feed all 7 rounds, but the slide does not stay back after the last round and the empty mags don't want to leave the gun requiring a screw driver to push them out.

As several others have reported, mine also shoots low, the rear sight should be higher or the front lower. Sight picture is good. At seven yards almost all shots go into one ragged hole

My major gripe with the gun is the trigger, ruined by the Series 80 safety. Yes it's getting better as the rounds shot accumulate (900 to date), but it is a major distraction.

To give credit where credit is due, the gun has been very reliable with the right mags. I've only shot factory ball and 230 grain RN reloads through it.

Like the OP, I like the looks of it. It only has the bare minimum of "bells and whistles," all of which are beneficial, i.e., the large bold sights, enlarged and scalloped ejection port and slight bevel to the magazine well. I like this. (Another essential, a good trigger, I was not able to try.) At gun shows locally the asking price is $620-$650; this could stand to come down about a Grant, considering they are not made from forgings.

To give credit where credit is due, the gun has been very reliable with the right mags.
That, right there, is 95% of what makes a handgun good. Everything else is secondary.

I've been shooting 1911s since the mid-70s. All I ever owned prior to my Remington R1 have been Colts. To me the Colt has always just summed up what a 1911 is.

I picked up my Remington off of Gun Broker for $539 a couple of months ago. At the time I bought it, I just thought it would be neat to own a Remington. This is the first time in over 90 years that Remington UMC has produced a handgun, couple that with the 100 year anniversary of the model ~ I was sold.

Now the performance: I have shot between 4-5 hundred rounds so far. My Remington R1 has been flawless. It has performed with the Remington, Colt, and other after market mags I own. Accuracy is tops, the gun is capable of much tighter groups than I am. That said, I can still chew one big hole at 15 yards.

Standard features on this gun are a match barrel, SS bushing, lowered ejection port, beveled magazine well and three dot Novak sights.

Out of the box my Remington has outperformed all my other 1911s in their stock configuration. However, in fairness, it does come with standard features that were after market on my older guns.

The only negative I have is the Novak sights. The newer ones have a set screw. This stripped out on my front site. Remington Customer Service was great. I had a new sight in less than a week.

Initially, I was not too impressed with the trigger. It had a "gritty feel" and was not as crisp as what I have been used to. It has since smoothed out with shooting and cleaning. The jury is still out on whether or not I will change it out. For now, I'm just enjoying the gun.

I got my R1 about 2 months ago. Shot low and left. Called remington and they said it was a problem the know of and had me send it in for free repair. I got it back yesterday with a new front site. Gave it a 100 rd test run today. Ran great till I got home to clean it and the front site fell out. Crap. I called remington up told them the prob and that I was not sending it to them again. They are sending me 2 boxes of ammo and a magazine to help make up for crap. It is now at my local store for repair. We'll see what happens. I love everything else about the R1 though.

Rather have a Ruger or a S&W E Series, but to be fair, I have not handled any of the three. I do have a Smith Pro Series 1911 though.

R1

I have had mine almost a year with no problems. I'd buy another one...in fact I'm going to get a 1911 from somebody this January in either a commander or officer length. If Remington has one out by then it will be high on my list.

new

Have owned 2 springfields before my new r1 enhanced. I can say without a doubt the remington is as good a shooter, as accurite and as trustworthy as either springfield. Trigger pull is smooth and easy, safety activates and deactivates easly with just thumb, Finish a little less flashy than springfield, but 200 dollars cheaper than sprinfiels also.

I enjoy my R1. I agree with the earlier comment about the finish though, some spots on mine are starting to sport a weird brownish tan hue. Its reliable and accurate though and works just fine right out of the box. I may make a few upgrades, but that's because I like to meddle, not because it needs it....

I haven't had a chance to shoot one but a local shop let me tear one down and examine all the parts and I was very surprised at the quality of finish and fitting on the example I saw. I really did not expect it to be that nice. The machining inside the frame and slide was better than any of my Springfields.

Got mine back from the shop. They sent it to remington for the second time. Put 250 rds through it and its on target and the site is staying tight. So far so good.

I think it has outstanding sights, but as I recall it has a series 80 firing pin safety. If you're looking for a "purist" 1911, this may be an issue.

Congrats on the 1991, I love mine. I do hope you got the one without the billboard though.... One of the ugliest things Colt ever did.....

Billboard and all. Never been shot though, according to both previous owners. Still has factory lube in it... no burnishing of the case head against the bolt face, so it's believeable.

I kinda want to turn my 1991 into a MEU(SOC), I bought it used as well, and have enjoyed it. I can get over the billboard, but I think Colt improved the looks a lot with the new 1991s....
