hi guys, can anyone here tell me a definate yes or no whether I should float the barrel on my Remmy 700.it is a hunting rifle, not designed for target shooting, but its what I use it for, along with a few other rifles which fill in the time while the remmy cools off,I read here that the design of the remmy 700 is to have a high point which touches the barrel, which affects the harmonics,if I was to remove the high point what are the chances of the rifle shooting better,Oh I forgot to add,it has a wooden stock

No we can't. While a rifle is "typically" more accurate if the barrel has been free floated, that isn't always the case. Some barrels perform better with a pressure point, some do best fully glass bedded. If your rifle shoots well with the factory pressure points, leave it alone or be able to replace them if you don't get the desired effect.

Generally with standard to heavyweight barrels free floating either helps, or at worst does not make things worse. With some skinny barrels free floating may make things worse. But you never know until you try. If it is shooting fine as is, I wouldn't change anything. If it is not shooting up to what you think it should then free floating is the first thing I'd try.

I would start with bedding the action and recoil lug. You can sand out the pressure point, but without solid action bedding it may get worse?

it depends on what you want to do with this rifle... If you are going to put a lot of rounds down the tube at a rapid pace then you should float it. if you are going to just shoot it a few times and let it cool down then shoot again don't worry about it. thats what would make a difference. But I do agree it should have a bed job either way. if it were me get a whole new stock I just don't like wood.

Thanks guys, just as I thought, the rifle shoots full power loads well but does get hot very quickly, I have begun loading 25 grns of alliant 2400,which gives about 2200 fps, which keeps it cooler, and as I dont usually shoot any more than 200 yards I can fire
lots more rounds before it starts climbing

Wood stocks can swell with moisture. If not free floated the poi can move as pressure from the stock varies. This is not always a problem but can be.
