Hey there, pretty new here but I figured I had come to the right place to ask this..

When I was about 8 or 9, my great grandfather passed away and held his rifles at auction. I was fortunate enough to have my mother buy my a Remington 514. Over the years while I was growing up and us moving around the stock has been beaten up a bit, got a ugly dent/gouge in the side of it.

Question is, how do I go about restoring the stock to a condition I can be proud of?

You might want to try steaming the dent out. Take a towel and lay it over the dent and use an Iron and steam it for a few minutes. As for the gouge? I don't know how big it is but if it isn't too big order some acraglass from midway and take the stock off and sand down the stock from the inside. Save the dust (alot) and mix it up with the acraglass and smooth the acraglass over the gouge. Let the acraglass dry a bit and add some more thoroughly. Let it cure completely and sand down to the stock. Touch up with stain to match. Or do what I did with my dad's Remington 514 restock it with a walnut stock. I grew up with that gun and passed it down to my son. :)
