Yesterday, my father and I found an old Remington Model 514 in my late Grandfather's closet, a gun that none of us knew about him having. Is this a decent gun? Is there anything I need to know about it?
I got my first rifle with trading stamps. Yep, prior to the GCA of 1968. It was a 514. It is a good single shot 22 rifle that still works good after all these years.
My father cut his teeth on one of those Remington 514s when he was growing up and his family didn't have a lot of money. I have the distinct pleasure of owning that gun now. It is one of the most accurate 22lrs that I've owned and shot. At 17 I restocked it with walnut and presented to my father as a christmas gift. I've busted more snakes, feral dogs and squirrels with that single shot than anything else when I was growing up. Of all of the guns that i'd be forced to get rid of that 514 would be the one that they would have to really pry out of my hands.
