I was goin' through the ol'e ammo box today and found a box of 20 Remington, 55 grain Soft Point, Accelerator for a 30-06. According to the charts, these little puppies move along at the speed of sound... over 4000 fps. :what:
My question is, what the heck would you use these for, and is safe to put through a nice vintage Remington 742 ?

thanks, Jeff (GUNKWAZY)

Thanks LennyJoe.

Poor little varmint, won't know what hit 'em. :D

The Accelerator is still made in .30-'06 and .30-30. It is a good idea but has some drawbacks. They are usually less accurate than a normal "varmint" rifle, they almost never shoot to the same sight setting as the normal round for the gun, and they will usually not function a semi-auto rifle.

They are perfectly safe in any rifle chambered for the base caliber.

I ran about 10 of them through an old model 70 and could not get under a 5 inch group at 100 yards.

Neat idea but they lack in accuracy compared to anything that will actually fly at 4000 fps like a swift or a .204

Preacherman, you said a mouthful there...

Should make a wonderful home defence round, though - just about zero chance of overpenetration!

Then they gotta figure out where it came from. And just exactly how much ballistic evidence is left on that little 55gr .224 bullet after it leaves the muzzle? (Once the sabot petals peel away...)
