the history first... if you wanna skip it and get to my question... its the second peragraph.

my grandfather had A.L.S., i was single at the time, and my roommate had just moved out leaving me with a 1,200 a month rent to pay on my own. i handled it fine, but didnt like it. when my grandfather started to really have trouble. i decided to move into there camper in the back yard and help out while my grandmother was at work. i got some good time with papa and got to here stories that others had never heard, and he was somewhat quite and didnt like talking about his past much, having a hard life. and i had fun driving his truck too. lol (dodge 1500 w/hemi). my grandmother hates guns. hates them. she had reason to i guess, as my great grandmother had one on her at all times as a moonshine runner in GA back in the day. and my grandmother had seen her use one a couple times, and i dont mean practice. she is a short woman, who cannot reach or see the top of the closet, my grandfather being 6'4" could hide anything upthere, she new he had one gun. but in our time togeather, he would have me make cigarette runs for him, as he was sapose to have quite, but we saw no point by this time, and so in seeing me keep this secret for him, he told me, kinda non chalantly (spelling?) that he had two guns. when he new he was getting close, he told my grandmother to give the gun to my uncle...this leaves the gun she didnt know about unclaimed. so my mother as a gift to me, got it for me. i like the story, so i shared.

anyway, this gun, as far as i know, was not used by him in my life time. my dating as placed it in the 40's. i had the exact year, but forgot. i used it once to kill a snake when i was living with them. i remember it fired but didnt eject and cycle. today i decided i would take it apart and clean it. but...well, i dont know how. lol. the picture shows what i have dont so far, i dont want to do what i cant undo (or vise versa, technically). any help would be greatly apreciated. i dont plan on taking it down all the way for every cleaning. but im positive it hasnt been cleaned in at least 25 years. and knowing papa, possibly not at all past cleaning out the barrel.

this one is rough on the outside, and i wanna leave it like that. just as it was. but i think these are such nice rifles, i would love to get another that is either in great shape, ir that i can put in great shape.

Thats as far as you should try to take it down.

Get a giant economy size can of WD-40 and flush & brush everything inside the receiver & trigger group.

Then blow it out with an air compressor and re-oil with Rem-Oil spray can.

The 550 uses the Williams Floating Chamber in order to cycle with Shorts & Longs.
Part #50 in this drawing:

It is a moving insert in the chamber of the barrel.

You need to get that out of the barrel and clean all the carbon out of it to get it to work correctly.

floritucky - can't help you on the gun, but welcome to The High Road.

However - this stuff -

is interesting enough that if you have the inclination, you could spin this out into a heck of a good novel.

rcmodel-

thanks, will do, that part is actually already out, i will be sure to clean it will, however, part number 43 (the metal block that the tube goes into, whatever its called) looks like it needs a good cleaning as well, but cant get it out, should i just leave it like it is anyway?

liberty1776-

thanks, im not much of a writer, and wouldnt even know were to begin. but there is enough truthful stories of my families to make a noval if i knew how. if i knew someone that could write that could take the stories i tell them and write it in a way that makes sense i would do it in a heartbeat.

Yes, leave it be.
Some things are best left unmolested.

Use WD-40, or nitro solvent, plus a small brush + toothpicks or whatever to pick it clean.

thanks. just got finished, working with what i had. all my gun cleaning kits, solvents, ect, are still boxed up from moving down from KY. and i couldnt figure out which box. so i used wd-40 as instructed. i wiped it all down best i could. i used some super oil to lubricate it (states firearms for one of its uses, so we will see). hoping to at least test it and see if it will cycle today if i have time.

thanks for the help, otherwise i most likely would kept going and then wouldnt be able to put it back togeather. lol.

Good luck with your Remington 550-1, floritucky, my father left me his and it is a nice, accurate rifle. Maybe it isn't fancy but mine works and is one of the most accurate .22s I've shot.
