I had a 552 many moons ago and it seemed really well made and was pretty darn accurate. I just gave my customized Ruger 10/22 to my son so I am without a .22 SA. Everybody and their brother has a Ruger so I was considering another 552 or a Browning SA22. How do the new 552's compare to the older ones? How does the 552 compare with the Browning SA22? Your thoughts on the matter would be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks
James

love my 552, put 1000s of rounds through her and all for a little cleaning, i don't like the factory trigger on a 10/22 way to heavy although i know there's a better aftermarket trigger but it's almost as much as a new 10/22. go for the speedmaster

I've had my 552 since 1989 and I really like it a lot. Just steer clear of Remington ammo and you'll be very happy. Mine likes Winchester Super-X, Mini-Mags, Federal Auto Match and Aguila.

I like my 552 a lot, it's been an excellent 22. BUT, it's an old one, so can't help you with what a new one would be like.

The few new ones i looked at, still looked good though...

The 552 has it all over the 10/22 in one regard. It shoots shorts, longs and long rifles. If you get one try some CCI Target Shorts. They're almost as quiet as CB caps and function semiauto.

The 'other' Remington, the 550, if it's clean and properly lubed, will run CB shorts semiauto, but you can't (well, you can, but you'll beat the gun to death) shoot Aguila SSS in it.

The Browning SA is, alas, long rifle only. Unless you get one that's shorts only.

The msrp on the 552 is $650, and the SA22 lists for $670 for a grade 1. The multi-caliber advantage of the Remington is worth something, but the SA22 is a beautiful work of art and has a much nicer finish. I have shot a 22 short model Browning, and they are sweet.
As much as I like Remington, for the dollar, given the choice, I would love to have the Browning.
