so i just bought one of these great little plinkers and decided it would be a good idea to write a review as i havent seen any recent ones... so here it goes:

i picked up my 597 at a C.A.L. Ranch store up here in idaho where im going to school. they had it for 157 or so minus 10% and also a 25$ rebate from remington. so i got a super good deal.
now i have a ruger 10/22 back home that my family has had forever. its a great gun dont get me wrong, but they are way overpriced.
i got the 597 in a standard .22lr with the gray synthetic stock, and iron sights. out of the box there are a few noticible differences from the ruger: it has a heavier barrel that i like alot more, the bolt has a lock open feature when the clip is empty, the mag release is alot easier to sccess on the side. i will admit that the trigger pull is a little heavy but to me it didnt make a huge difference.

so i took it out and shot it the day i bought it after taking it all down to clean it (which i super easy to do btw) and the thing is incredible. at 50 yards with iron sights i could not miss. and that was just shooting off of my knee. i cant tell you what kind of groups cause we were just shootin some little metal targets and cans. but it is seriously super accurate.
alot of reviews i read in the past complained of not feeding properly and jamming alot. with the newer mags they have i never had one misfire or jam. the only problem i had was with the remington brand 30 round clip. it was a piece of crap i wouldnt bother even spending the money.

overall i am super happy with my purchase. i got it for like half of what you pay for a ruger and i would say its easily as good if not better. (please dont tear me apart for that ruger guys! i have one too! haha). i would reccomend it too anyone! my future plans include possibly the archangel stock, a scope of some sort, and some extended mags that actually work.

thats all i got for ya. thanks for reading!

Congrats on a usually underrated shooter! I had one a few years ago with the factory scope - I think I paid $180 or so for mine. It was a great gun. Sold it to finance a Ruger 77/22 - the "better" gun doesn't shoot as well as the "cheap" Remmy.

Go to the .22rimfire forums for info on how to "tune" the bolt if you have feed problems.

Picked one up a few years ago because I was in the mood to buy a gun. Mine has the camo stock, and metal magazine. Never had a single issue with it.

With fancy "match" .22lr I've shot strings with it at 50 yards using irons.

I might add an optic to it soon, but it hasn't been a priority, and the rifle doesn't see much use.

I got mine 4 - 5 years ago and its nothing but problems, I'm glad Remington fixed their issues in their new generation 597's.

Have you messed with the guide rods? I think some were over torqued at the factory. & as a result caused jamming issues.
If I remember right? Just a lil more than finger tight.

guide rods problem was one of the issue I had to deal with, accuracy is a major one, there is another issues with mag release spring somehow it came out and receiver got jammed, now it thinks I have no bullets in the magazine so it stays open after each shot.

yeah it was Black Friday sale 4 years ago at Dick's...

alright so i have an update on my awesome little .22. i have now put a little over 1000 rounds through it since i bought it. i absolutely love this gun. i have not had a single problem with it at all. i took it apart and polished the guide rods and lubed it like i have read on some other forums, and the thing shoots like a dream. not only that but it is accurate as hell. outshoots my buddys 10/22 all day long.

if you are thinking about getting one of these or just considering a .22 to plink with, pick this thing up. you will not regret it.

wally world has it on sale up here in idaho for $177 with a scope. screamin deal!

Question from 50 miles west of Idaho:
Is that rifle drilled and tapped for scope mounts?

I've had mine in 22 Mag for a years. Only thing to watch out for is the outside of the barrel getting a bit of surface rust through the finish. Never noticed it until one day I ran my hand down the barrel and it can off sort of dusty brown. I rubbed it with a rag, and yup - rust dust.

So, I popped the action out of the stock, masked off the rest, wiped it down with carb cleaner and shot a coat of John Deere Muffler Black on the barrel and we've been good ever since :)

I'm glad to hear that yours is functioning well. I had one years ago and it jammed a lot. Now I own a 10/22 and am very satisfied. 10/22 + VQ extractor =reliable
