Harry;

The Remington model 5 is the previous Charles Daly by another name & a higher price tag. Daly had a contract with Zastava of (the former) Yugoslavia to import Zastava guns under the Daly name. Remington out-bid Daly & is now importing the Zastava guns under the Big Green banner. They pay more to Zastava than Daly did, & you pay more across the counter for the same gun, typical conduct for the Ilion Ogre. Guess what company I'm not a fan of.

the CZ trainer can typically be found for right around $200.00. The Lux, or American, will cost more, but are very nicely finished, have an excellent walnut stock and are indeed "hella-accurate".

Go to www.rimfirecentral.com, or do a search here on THR, for opinions of the CZ rimfires. If, and that's a real if there, I remember correctly, Ozark Arms online may be a CZ dealer & they're located in the greater Carolina's. Bud's gunshop carries them online, I'm purt-sure of that.

Go with the marlin although I would buy a used one I got mine for less than half that price but mine was old. They are great guns last a lifetime shoot anything and as for the scope issue I wouldn't put a scope on that myself they are plenty accurate enough without it. Mine takes quite the beating as its my go to coon gun it has never let me down in the field I do clean the action out about every 100rds but thats just my personal preferance.

I don't have experience with the 597. I considered buying one a few years ago, but decided against it.

My first gun was a Marlin 60. I really have enjoyed that gun. It is a lot of fun to shot, very accurate, and with the right ammo extremely reliable (it is somewhat ammo sensitive, but with CCI Mini-Mags and Stingers I can't remember it ever having an issue, not one).

Several years ago I bought a Ruger 10/22. Everyone spoke so highly of them, and with some of the cheapest ammo sometimes causing trouble in my Marlin, I decided to give it a try. It was less ammo sensitive than my Marlin, but not as accurate and not as fun. There was nothing particularly wrong with it, but I still have my Marlin and I long ago sold my Ruger.

If I didn't already have one, I'd have to buy myself a Marlin 60.

Harry;

How much is the Remington model 5 at your gun store? Myself, I'd almost certainly buy another Savage MKII bolt .22 and save money over the Remmie too.

Without regard to price, I'd prefer the Marlin hands down. I've owned or used to own 10/22's and 597's....my fun shooters are the marlin 60 with iron sights and a Marlin 39. But what surprised me most about the price is the cost...that Marlin should run a lot less than $259 at a box store....My local Walmart has them (SB model? stainless with scope) for $189....so should the Remmy be less for that matter.
