I've see that a lot of service rifle shooters use these primers for .223 loads in competition. I'm wondering if these are equivilent to CCI400 Small Rifle or CCI450 Small Rifle Magnum primers.

I've never used BR primers before but if John Hollinger is using them with Rel15 I think I should at least try them.

I shoot the snot out of them. I have switched over to them for all my SR primer stuff. They are great for high intensity loads and in an AR do wonderfully.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Agree only partly. When developing your load for your rifle, you should choose primers by how they work for you. I have found that Fed 205 primers work best with some of my loads using Varget, but Rem 7.5 are better with VV N140. It is not the same for all loads, however you may find that 1 primer will yield good consistent low SD for a variety of loads and powder choices.

They are not like a magnum primer but do have a slightly hotter and longer flame.
In short more brisance. Pictures at the link below. Good luck

I understand. John H has his pet loads listed on his website and since I already have the same bullets and same powder I thought I'd give it a shot. I've checked around and on Jim Owens website he has articles from a guy who is highly regarded in NRA and he uses a similar load. Right now I only use CCI400 and CCI450 so I was wondering if one of my primers was in any way similar.

My current pet load is Win748 with Hornady 68gr match rounds and CCI Mag primers.

Sometimes the use of a primer with less brisance can significantly improve downrange performance as well as improving SD and ES.

I stopped using 748 when I found that 25.3g Varget was more accurate and cleaner with the 68s in my 20 in barreled AR with CCI BR4 primers.

Lots of factors to consider and lots of really good powders to choose from.
I also have not seen a significant difference between the 68g and the Seirra 69.

Also there was a trend for a time where shooters were just using the 77g for the short course and the long. I havent followed service rifle for a while but I think a lot of the better shooters are back to 80s for the long and 69 or 77 for the short. I could be totally wrong so dont quote me till we know for sure.

I have two of john's Upper's. I found the 7 1/2's and CCI SR BR's to be almost interchangable. I almost wonder if the CCI's might not give smaller groups at times. I will not shoot a federal primer in my service rifles using John's data because I Pierced primers with mild loads in a match and ruined a firing pin. The 71/2's and CCI SR BR's held up to the job all ways. I load the 7 1/2's for al most all the matches I shoot as they do work well and the cci's in a pinch.
