I know a lot of guys use CCI primers, I just never have. The only primers left at the local Bi Mart store here in Oregon was CCI450 small rifle. I use wolf small rifle magnum primers for 223 loads with no problem. The lady was insane at the store and insisted if I buy these 450s and load them in 223 I'm going to die per her father.... I was told the difference in the magnum on rifle primers was cup hardness. Is this not the case with the 450s? I've loaded a lot of pistol stuff, just recently began with rifle so any input would be great. I bought these to stay ahead of a drought and have plenty of wolf primers left. I just thought I'd re work up a load for this 1000 primers of CCI. Thanks, and hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.

Unless you're loading a 223 that has a slam-fire problem I can't imagine there being a problem, I've used them for decades..... literally! Perhaps the young lady in question wanted them for her father?

If I'm thinking right the 450 should be the way to go for an AR to prevent slam fire. Just my thinking. At least that is what wolf was apparently thinking when they made their Magnum small rifle for AR's. I'll work up a load. I'm sure I wont have any problems. I start low and work up and am cautious. I was just suprised by her demand. I did buy the last box, and she was pretty ticked I bought all 1000 of them. Maybe they were for her pa, lol.

CCI makes NATO rated primers for the .223 and the 308/30-06. For the .223 it's their CCI #41 NATO primers. The #41 primers are magnum strength primers and the cups on CCI primers are fairly thick, thicker than most.

Back in 2008 when I couldn't get CCI NATO primers I did use others.
I did use CCI450 primers in the .223 and also Remington 7 1/2 primers which Remington recommends for semi-auto .223 ammo.

In the 30-06 ammo meant for the Garand, when I couldn't get CCI #34 I used CCI 200 LRP and I also used Winchester LRP. Neither were magnum strength and neither allowed a slam fire. I would rather use the NATO primers but when I can't I feel CCI primers are probably the best choice but I also include the Remington 7 1/2 for .223 ammo because the manufacturer recommends them.

I've loaded about 70,000 CCI primers through Dillon presses. Whatever you've heard is wrong, they run fine.

Federal's I'd be slightly more careful of, as they are more sensitive.

I have used CCI #400 Standard SR primers for .223 since about 1975.

No problems.

You will need to adjust and work up your load if you suddenly switch to CCI 450 Magnum primers though.
