I am working through setup issues on a gifted gun that came with mounts I believe to be too low for the scope I am now using as my thumb is hitting the scope and affecting bolt action maneuver. I bought a NIB Bushnell Trophy 4-12x40 from my gun collector neighbor for $85 to get me started.

My brief research shows the Game Reaper Remington 700-Long Action-Medium Mount https://www.amazon.com/Game-Reaper-...001EYFH90/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 to be a viable choice. As noted on the instruction included with my scope and various sources, closer to the barrel is desired. But it seems the Sendero bull barrel benefits from medium to high mounts?

Looks like it has Leupold dual-dovetail mounts. Just get higher rings.

Personally, I would change the way I grip the bolt. Don’t flare your wrist out as you open and cycle the bolt. Can’t squish your thumb against the scope if your thumb doesn’t have any reason to get between them.

Without seeing more pics of the setup it's hard to say, but from what I can see the scope height looks about right to me.

That said, I'm not a fan of dovetail mounts. The DNZ's would be a better choice IMO. I also like Talley lightweights or Burris Zee rings in a Weaver type base. If you want to keep costs down just use what you have and modify your technique. With that scope I'd be buying low rings even if I replaced them
