Recently picked up a very lightly used Remington 700 Sendero(1996 model) in 7mm RM. I have a spare Leupold Vari-Xiic 3-9x40 sitting in the safe. Shots will be paper out to 500 yards and game will be deer and black bear out to 500 but mostly 350 and in. Obviously I plan to save money towards a new scope but will the old Leupold give me a good idea of what this rifle is capable of?

If everything is in proper working order and you use the right bullets you should be good to go. Then the question arises, what are you capable of?

The older vari x II is a good place to start it will certainly be able to show what rifle is capable of. My older eyes preferore mag at top end for distance shooting.

Well the scope has been in the safe a few years but was working perfect when it was removed. I'm sure I will be the limiting factor in the equation.

I guess my hope is the older scope will buy some time....kind of give me time to get used to the rifle while saving for a better scope.

I don’t see any reason this scope won’t last as long as the rifle and needs to be replaced for your needs.

Finding ammo the gun likes and feeding it properly will be a bigger factor if your scope isn’t broken

For example, my custom 308 precision rifle is a 1/2” gun with proper ammo, or a 1.5” gun with 150 grain soft points

One is a decent hunting load, the right combo is one hope at 100yds

A Remington 700 Sendero in 7mm Rem Mag is probably the only rifle I would selectively put a Leupold on top of these days, and only out of nostalgia. Should be good to go, and if it isn’t, it’s backed by a lifetime warranty.
