So which should I get? .308 or .300 win mag? What's the recoil difference between the two? Can you go out for an afternoon of shooting with the win mag and not damage your shoulder? Also will be used for deer hunting and maybe something bigger, but rarely. Would be reloading my own ammo too whichever way I go. Finally, still can't decide between blued and stainless. I'm leaning toward a blued barrel. Actually .30-06 is in the running too. Can you get a 700 with a heavy barrel in .30-06? Anyway, any info appreciated. Thanks!

Finish is a thing of preference, so go with whatever you think. Personally I don't have any SS rifles, but I will take the plunge one of these days maybe.

The .300 Mag is kind of a punisher for an afternoon of shooting, if you ask me. It is a powerful round that for no more than you would need to shoot in a hunting situation, is a great choice. For a day of shooting, the .308 is more manageable, but still wears out the shoulder of some with extensive shooting. The .300 will lay them down hard, but I know a lot of people that hunt with the .308 as well.

Get a 700 POLICE in .308 and don't look back.

Buy MATCH ammo for bragging rights.
Shoot surplus for FUN.
Shoot High Energy or Light Magnum ammo for hunting.
Put the rifle in a Hogue stock when you're not target shooting.

Seriously.:)

So what's the big difference in the following?

700 PSS
700 VLS
700 with the 5R Mil Spec Barrel
I've only seen the last one in stainless. Anyway to get a blued one? Thanks

I would second BusMaster's recommendation for the PSS. The PSS and the VLS are very similar rifles. The main difference is the stock. The PSS has the thicker palm swell and a removeable magazine on some models. I have a VLS in .223 and it has the thinner stock and an internal magazine. I'm not familar with the last one, it looks like a PSS but with a stainless barrel and action. Unless the barrel countour or rate of twist is different, The PSS is the blued version.

The only thing I have done on my Remingtons is adjust the triggers, something you may want to have a gunsmith do after your purchase.

As far as the 5-R, I haven't seen a blue one out there, now I know they make them however because that is the barrel they use on the M24. This barrel is 2 inches shorter than the PSS and has a different type of rifling, 5 lands and groves which leads to less bullet deformation for more accuracy at long distances, and longer barrel life.
