Trying to find the answer but have a hard time. Is the extractor pin on the bolt a common issue? Along with the spring loading system jamming a round? I seen a few people mention these flaws, if its truly a common issue I might rethink getting one as my new hunting rifle. (Not sps tactical) is there any way to eliminate the hinged floor plate spring set up for a detachable magazine? If the spring does cause jams for me? Thanks guys!

I've owned an SPS VS for 2 years not. Heard a few problems about extractors but that's about it. Had no issues with mine at all. The day I brought it home I ordered a B&C stock and Timney trigger.

Decent rifle if you address the above 2 issues from what I've seen.

I've owned on for years and never had an issue. I also switched to a B & C stock shortly after I got it. Big improvement and worth every dime.

There's several companies that make detachable magazine conversions for the 700. Most kits use M14 / M1A magazines and from what I've read they work great. I will warn you though that they don't come cheap!

PTG makes a good DBM system. So do Badger, CDI and a host of others. Many of them use the AI magazine system (Ruger does as well on their Gunsite Scout). They are robust, but the mags themselves are not cheap.

Well guys I bought it! Thanks for the help! Post pics when I get home

So I looked through some of those in the link provided above...I noticed only a few brands had 300 ultra mag. My question is would the ones that list max length of round of "x"inches work if my round is shorter? I think I saw the 338 lapua mag might work?

I just noticed this post. I had a serious problem with the ejector plunger on my SPS TAC .308. I did a a quick light cleaning and inspection when I bought it, there was some crud on the bolt face, that I removed easily, took the firing pin assembly apart, and everything looked good. A few days ago, I got out to the range in 20F snowy, windy weather, and couldn't get a round to chamber - the bolt wouldn't close. The ejector plunger was stuck just above the bolt face. When I got home, I removed the plunger/spring retaining pin and extracted the the plunger and out falls what looked like dried mud. It was packed in so hard that it stopped the plunger from moving in or out. All better now, and no other problems. She shoots fine now.

Taking this with me to the range this Monday to see how it does. Taking three different loads with me and sighting it in at 200yrds.

Using the following cartridges:

Federal 180gr muzzle velocity: 3200fps and 3155ft-lbs@200yrds
Remington stage 3 180gr muzzle velocity: 3250fps and 3003ft-lbs@200yrds
Remington stage 1 (30-06 load) 150g muzzle velocity: 2910fps and 1827ft-lbs@200yrds

Can't wait to get this sighted in! Also ordered a KRG bolt knob, and looking into the CDI DBM kit....any CDI users here?

Here are the 3 different rounds (federal, rem 3, rem 1)

I need help!!! lol, So today I took it out and couldn't quite get it where I wanted it. My 22lr and .357mag shot more accurate than this thing today lol. I have an older weaver scope on it, and tried to adjust accordingly but it wouldn't react much it seemed like.

Started at 25yrds like the gun store I got it said. so after I did some tuning this is as close as I could get it...seemed like no matter how many clicks over I made it wouldn't really change from this point....at 25 yrds:

(Center was a user error lol)

And as you can imagine, when I took it out to 100 it was even uglier...didn't get consistent grouping, and was having a hard time getting it in.

So my question. With this bullets ballistics (180gr) if I wanted it sighted at 200yrs...how would I achieve that? Won't the bullet pass the scopes sight at two points? Like an arch somewhat? So would how it shoots at 25yrds have the same characteristics at 200yrd?

Sorry if that's confusing but I'm trying to wrap my mind around sighting this scope/gun in. So should I try 50yrds? 75?

On another note, put 40rds through it and defiantly packs a punch but wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...here is pic

Most DBM takes AI style mags not m1a. IMHO surgeon makes the best bottom metal you can buy.

ive probably shot a 100k rounds through 700 and have had exactly one extractor break and it was my own fault trying to pound the bolt out after an accidentaly overload. Most of what you will read about remingtons not extracting well or that there inferior to controled round guns for dangerous game come from guys whos biggest danger is getting bad eyes from there computer screen.

Forget the detachable mag and get some better glass. Also, take a tarp and old blanket or sleeping bag to lay on and get off that table.

First off, current production 700's don't use a pin to retain the extractor anymore.
Since the late 80's or early 90's, the extractors have been a snap-in design.
Of all the extractor designs I have seen used on 700's and custom 700 clones, the Remington design has been the most reliable.
I see problems with mini-16 extractors bouncing cases into scope knobs and then back into the action.
There is also an issue with mini-16 extractors needing additional clearance in the barrel counterbore.
Any of the extractors that cut through the bolt nose weaken the Remington "3 rings of steel" design.

You can get a drop-in detachable magazine setup from Wyatt's.
Most other detachable magazine systems will need some Gunsmithing work to inlet the stock.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the existing 700 design that you would need to change out parts for it to be reliable.

Just saw this post, and it kind of fits with the problem I have been having also,
I bought a brand new REM-700 and couple weeks ago, cleaned the factory dirt out of it and lubed it well, It HAD the ADL style magazine in it,and I had filled it A COUPLE TIMES
and chambered/extracted no problem,,,, so then I read about Wyatt's detachable magazine kit and decide to buy one, along with a HS-Precision Sendero stock,
Put everything together and noticed the forward-part of detachable magazine does not sit flush with the stock,so I read the little note that came with the Wyatt kit and it states the front pillar should be .735" and rear 1.250" thick,, the rear is dead-on at 1.25" but, the front is a little thick at .770",, Im a having problems with the bolt not closing, and occassionally it wont extract the shellfrom the chamber,, Im beginning to think the Wyatt kit was a bad idea, and I should havejust ordered OE Remington parts to convert it to a BDL-style floorplate,, any body have some suggestions ??
I have contacted redhawkrifles, but have not got n answer yet,, was hoping to figure it out myself, orr with the help of THR ....

The pillar height locates the magazine catch which then locates the magazine.
It's more important that the pillar height is correct than that the stock and bottom metal are flush with each other.

It sounds like your stock needs to be inletted a little deeper.

Well i t was late when I posted this question last night, after sleeping on it I decided I will dig out the old stock, and return it back to OE shape to see if the extraction part works itself out, then I'll know for sure if the Wyatt was a bad investment :banghead:
Is there any others that have used this product and had issues ??

Jumping back up to the sighting in problem, I switched from the Remington core-lokt 180g to federal trophy tip boat tail 180gr and it shot much better...had to adjust the scope little more but it sits 1.25" high at 100yrds now...pleased with how it shot yesterday
