remington 700 sps tactical and optics questions

i'm purchasing a .308 remington 700 tactical sps from my neighbor for $400. i'm not buying the leupold scope he has on it so i'll need another scope. any feedback on the bushnell e6500? i can get a new 2.5-16x50 30mm mildot e6500 for $539 which i thought was a pretty good deal. i will be using this scope for both hunting and target shooting out to 500 yards. my other choices are:

Bushnell e6500 2.5-16x42 mildot for $480
bushnell e4200 6-24x40 mildot for $405
leupold vxii 6-18x40 mildot for $485
sightron 6.5-20x50 mildot big sky sii for $508 plus $75 mail-in rebate
Millett 6-25x56 LRS-1 Tactical 35mm for $403
Burris 6-24x44 Signature Select mildot for $544

which would you all think would be the better choice?

Is the 50mm tube on the e6500 worth the extra $60 over the 42mm?
any tips or feedback on the rifle? havent shot it so i'm hoping its a shooter.

16x is plenty for targets at 500yd.
6x may be too much for some hunting. depends.

50m will be brighter and heavier

I have the 6500 on my .308 and love it. being able to go from 2.5 to 16 is awesome. the target knobs are excellent, especially for gloved hands and the adjustments it makes are very consistent. i'd recommend it, but you listed a lot of good scopes.

The more I think about it, I'll probably go the e6500 route. It's just more versatile. Is $400 a decent price on the rifle?

6500 is a nice looking scope. i have plenty of pics of mine on here for your viewing pleasure

IIRC, the sps tactical has the heavy barrel. with that and the classic 700 receiver, it should be a real nice rifle for $400. I haven't held one, but sounds like most peoples complaints are about the stock, of which there are plenty of aftermarket options

What makes a used rifle so good is the extras you get.

I had $500 into a rem700 SPS varmint in .308
I got 2 stocks, 2 triggers, scope and mounts, dies and brass plus $200 cash. It was traded. The $500 was what I had into my end. The guy got a complete AR I paid $700 for new.

I went with a EGW mount, Burris Xtreme rings and a Mueller Scope.
I traded 4K of 9mm brass for the Mueller. Not a bad scope for about $250.

I modified my stock. The front is a bit flexible. Overall I like the shape of the stock. I now have a 3rd stock that is a Hogue take-off from a 700. The front was flexing on it. That seems to be the trend on factory synthetics stock.

The retail price for this gun is $734.00. Bud's sell them new (shipped) for $550.00 (this is not an endorsement for Bud's as I never dealt with this company). Figure another $25.00 to $35.00 for FFL transfer fees, so a new one would set you back around $585.00.

There is also a rebate from Remington for $40, so you're back down to $545 for a new one. So you figure you are saving about $150. To me, sounds like a good deal if this one is in excellent condition. I recently purchased this same gun for around $800 with a Nikon Monarch and I couldn't be more pleased. Last weekend I had 3 5-shot groups under an inch from 100 yds. Had I known it was going to shoot this good I would have gladly paid full retail ;-)

No scope with this rifle, just rings which I can't use if I get a 30mm tube scope. Rifle is in immaculate shape, has about 150-200 rounds through it. So if it would cost $545 with the rebate for the rifle and transfer fees then I'm saving $145 for this rifle. Hope it shoots as good as I expect it too!

Still a good deal. I ended up with some take off rings and bases from a used rifle. They came in handy on a friends rifle. I ended up putting a 20 MOA picatinny rail on mine. I have come to really appreciate bases that allow you to remove and replace a scope without losing zero.

It should shoot pretty well.

And yes I'll post range reports but it'll prolly be a month before I can. I am buying this rifle and scope with the money from selling my tikka SS lite 7mm mag and zeis conquest to my brother in law.
