Ihave a Rem 700 SPS Tactical 308 with Warne bases and Leupold Mark 4 rings. I have a 6-20 Vari X-III Leupold available to put on it but I worry it maybe too much magnification for deer/coyote hunting and secondary use as a SHTF gun. Should I go 4-12 or 4-14??

I'd use the 6-20 and be done, that's a great scope. You have 6x which I'd probably never need and anywhere else up to 20x.

As a SHTF gun, you'll be dead by the time you find a target in a 6-20 if you have the magnification turned up. As a deer gun, you'll never need more than a 3-9 for an ethical shot and if you're hunting 'yotes with a .308, you'll leave very little unless you use 110gr V-King or V-Max bullets. Have fun, though.

I have a Simmons 3X9 that would work great on that 700. Trade ya even!:D:neener:

That way, I could put the Vari X-III on my 700VTR in .308 (and put the Nikon 6X18 back into inventory).:what:

I have a Millet 6-24 on mine for deer and varmint. Go with your Leu Vari-X III 6.5-20 and don't look back. Besides, you already have the scope. That means less spent on more scopes, and more cash for ammo and hunting trips.
