Did some wheeling and dealing today and sold a few guns including my Savage Hog Hunter in .308. With the money I picked up this baby!

It came with a Bell and Carlson M40 stock, Millet 4-16x50 Illuminated mildot tactical scope, and Leupold 20 MOA base and rings.

I got what I think is a pretty good deal. Anyone care to guess?

Nice upgrade! Anything in particular you didn't like about the Hog Hunter that made you want to sell it?

Well, I couldn't get the rifle to group well, so I decided to sell it. Then, after sending some emails to SWFA I think it was actually my SWFA SS 10x42 scope that was buggered (it is now on its way back for them to take a look at it). Of course, once decide to sell something and start looking at other rifles it is difficult to NOT get something new, especially after I saw this rifle.

Did you get a good deal? Well, I'm not sure. I would say the package that you have now is worth right about $1000. Now, whether the guns that you sold were worth more than that or not doesn't really matter because I think you'll enjoy this setup.

Do you handload?

Ding ding ding, I paid right at $1000. I easily would have passed $1000 if I had tried to build this myself. I do handload, and I've got some 168gr MatchKings screaming for this rifle right now.

How does it compare to the Savage Hog, Id like to read. Been interested in those for a while.

I'm looking forward to hopefully getting to the range tomorrow and trying it out. Gotta load up some 168gr SMKs first though...

First range report is very promising. At the very least I know that I have a rifle that is more accurate than I am, and I can now start focusing on technique.

Tried out a few loads today. First was 6 rounds of commercial Hornady 165gr BTSP ammo that came with the gun. Not spectacular, but I know the size of the group is due to my skill.

Next I tried some home cooked 168gr SMKs on top of 42gr of IMR 4895. These were better.

Finally, I wanted to try out my Hornady 150gr SP bullets that I'll use for hunting. These were on top of 40.3gr Varget, and I was in a hurry so I started with the barrel already hot and fired all 10 rounds in about 4 minutes. There was one flyer where I flinched when the guy next to me fired, so I ignored that one.

With a little work on fundamentals I know I can get this down to sub-MOA, and my goal for these hunting rounds were 1 MOA.

That's a nice set up. Have you tried any heavier loads of Varget? I use 46 grains of Varget with 150, 165 and 168 grain projectiles in my M1A SOCOM, and my M1A Loaded. Those loads are also quite accurate in my M70s.

However, I get the best accuracy with 168 grain projectiles and 47 grains of Varget in my M70s, especially in the Stealth. My M700 Police was extremely accurate with this load. For what it's worth, Sierra 165 grain Game King HPs and 46 grains of Varget produce consistent 0.75" groups.

My point, Varget is a pretty forgiving powder. You might be under-loading. My manual (Speer No. 13) show 42 grains of Varget as the starting load for autoloader rifles, and max for autoloaders as 46 grains, using 168 grain projectiles. The same manual shows the Varget powder charge range as 43 to 47 grains for 150 grain projectiles. Your M700 will stand that and then some.
