I have found a Remington 700 in 7mm Remington Mag that I'm considering buying. It has a synthetic stock with a blind magazine box, barrel & receiver is matte finish with sights(maybe 26" barrel?), has a hard rubber recoil pad, and comes with a Simmons Aetec scope. It will also come with 140 rounds of Remington Core-Lok ammo. This rifle is in excellent shape and has been fired very little. It has spent most of its life in a safe. To me, it looks like an ADL model but with a synthetic stock. What would be a reasonable price to expect to pay for this rifle. I personally know and trust the seller.

Rifle new $429.99 @ Gander Mtn. Caliber vary by store. Correction , with scope.. Make of scope not listed

the scope would have little to no value in my mind. the rifle in excellent condition with the ammo, seems $500 is a good price on both ends.

Honestly the Simmons scope would probably be removed and replaced with a VX3 or Conquest.

I was offered the rifle and ammo for $450....could probably talk down to 400-425. I have compared this particular rifle to the current SPS and it seems a bit different. To me the fit and finish looks much better than the current SPS offerings from Remington.

First off is the finish...on this rifle the matte finish appears much smoother and not nearly as rough.

Next is the stock...it does not have the grip panels like the SPS and it does not feel as flimsy as the current SPS stock.

Lastly the bolt operates much smoother on this particular rifle.

Another idea that is running through my head is to get it and shoot/hunt with it like it is for now. As time and funds permit I could buy an aftermarket barrel and synthetic stock and build a better rifle.

It seems like it's in great shape, you have done your homework and like it's design better than current ones and it's a good price. Especially when including the ammo.
Time to buy it.

Sounds exactly like my .270win. I wouldn't be afraid of it at 450, assuming the ammo is $1 a shot which is normal your looking at $310 for the gun. It's easily worth that....but I still would try to negotiate. Cash laying out on a table is a really strong negotiator in itself.

Take a look at the s/n on the rifle in question. Supposedly the earlier rifles were more closely fitted and smoother. The earliest 700's had no letter before the number, then they progressed through the alphabet until they reached G prefix. The latest SPS rifles I have seen have an RR prefix. Real Remington guys look for letter prefix no later than C for best quality. Personally, I have not seen much difference through the G series but the RR's are rougher.

Thanks for the heads up. I will check that out. He told me I could come shoot it anytime, so I can get a good idea of what it will do.

I won't pay over 75% of what a new rifle sells for, so if one is $479 new, then about $360 or so for the rifle. The scope adds nothing. The ammo would cost around $175 for you to buy new, so $500 or so total wouldn't be a bad deal. But most folks won't pay anywhere near full price for ammo, usually about 1/2 that so figure about $80-$90 for the ammo. Somewhere around $450 would be fair. Anything less would be a bargain for you.

I agree with everyone so far. It sounds like an ADL. If you like it, get it. Bed it and shoot it. Like everyone says if it is not a Leupold scope, get one for it. Use the cheapo scope on your 22. At least the ammo is all the same headstamp. Which is a good thing. That will give you a leg up when you reload it.

Found out a little more about the rifle tonight. It has a serial # prefix of "E" and does not have the j-lock.

Still have not pulled the trigger on the rifle yet as I have been busy the last few weeks. I did pick up a new VX-3, 3.5-10 to go on this rifle, so I asked the owner what he'd take for the rifle and ammo...minus the scope. He told me he'd take $325 for the rifle, ammo, and Leupold one piece base and rings. I told him to consider it sold!
