Handled one of these in .308 at a local store (they also had one in .260 Remington). Comes with a bipod. The triangular profile barrel is curious, though. What's the theory behind it? Seems that if it was such a good idea, then everyone would be making these.

Novelty, looks, pretty kuch same as all barrel fluting, or odd shapes. They marketed them as being "stiffer, and lighter!" but ive shot a few and really couldnt tell a difference The top porting sucks at recoil reduction, or even muzzle jump attenuation, so its really just for looks and be noisy.

That said if i found one at a cheap price id buy it, lop the compensator/brake off, and recrown the barrel.

I really do like they way they look.

It serves the same purpose as fluting. Both are a compromise. A thick barrel is stiffer, and all else being equal is more accurate. The thinner mountain rifle barrels made by Remington or the Featherweight barrels Winchester uses are light and easy to carry, but you give up a little accuracy. The triangular barrels, or fluting starts with a thicker barrel, but some material is removed to make them a little lighter. You still don't get the barrel quite as light as the thinner profile barrels, but it does make a difference. And in my experience if there is any accuracy lost to the heavier plain round barrels it isn't much.

I have one in 308,but it doesn't have the brake and it's a full 24 inches long.Cabela's sold some of them like that rather than the shorter version that loses 2 inches of barrel length for the brake. The triangular shape kinda makes it almost as light as a sporter barrel and almost as accurate as a heavy barrel.I like it because I can put it in a B&C Medalist stock and use it like a heavy barrel long range rig,or put in the Tupperware stock and lighten it up for hunting. It's a very accurate rifle as long as I watch getting the barrel hot.It cools down quick,I think the shape acts like cooling fins on a small engine.I also had one in 223 with the brake, and that one wouldn't shoot good at all.It got replaced by a Shilen Match grade and it is one of the most accurate rifles I've ever had.The factory stocks on the VTR's aren't much force, too flimsy, comb too low and thin and not stable in the bedding area.My 308 will shoot half inch groups at 100 if I take my time and it's in the B&C stock.

Wish I had seen one with the 24" barrel. That would be a nice rifle.

Bought one in .308 when they came out. Accuracy was not so good with 150gf loads at 100 yards. I felt that the stock was too flimsey, so I fitted it to a Boyds laminated stock, and bumped up to 168gr AMAX. Rifle is a little heavier, but instead of 1 1/2"-2" at 100 yards, this rifle will shoot 1/2" at 100 yards all day, hot or cold. Got a 5 shot group into just under 1" at 200 yards. Couldn't be happier (it still doesn't like 150gr bullets).

Had one in 308 without the brake and loved it. Had a Fulfield II 4.5-14 scope on it, and it was very accurate. Had to sell it while I was out of work for back surgery, and regret it.
