I just aquired a 338 Lapua and I'm lost on what bases I want to put on. I can get Leupold Mark 4 bases for $80.25 shipped to me. What is the difference between these and nightforce, badger etc?

Also same thing with rings. I can get the Leupold Mark 4 rings for $90.25 shipped. I see there is a lot of choices out there, so what would you choose and why?

The scope will soon be on order which is a VXIII 8-25x50. Reason for this is cause I'm getting it for $525.00 which I can't pass up.

Just go google Remington 700 Police 338 Lapua. Nothing custom that I see. I'm told it has the 40x trigger though. I am familar with the mark pro triggers, but not this one.

If you are talking about a one-piece, picatinny-style, 20MOA base, then the Leupold is fine. Personally, all my LR rifles wear Badger's, but they are a bit more expensive. Should you go with the Leupold Mark 4 rings, I would suggest lapping them prior to attaching the scope.

anyway. leupold rings are the best bet.
I would not really say they are the best, but they are pretty decent and for most people would work fine. There are certainly better options out there, but as you've already found out, you really pay for them.

"another thing im curious of is why do you need a .338 lapmag?
are you a 1200 meter competitor?"

What concern is it to you why I or anyone else would "need" one? I get bored and want to shoot rabbits.......:neener:

Anyways, it looks like it will be a little while before I'm able to head out to the range, but I'm sure it will be a blast.

sweet rifle. my next up in caliber will probably be that one. I went seekins precision through liberty optics on my 700p. they look NICE, real heavy duty type feel. and I've had no problem with them holding zero. highly recommend.

good luck!

If it was my rifle and I was adding a Leopold rifle scope, I would stick with Leopold bases and rings. On the other hand, Warne makes excellent bases and rings and makes the licensed mounts and rings for Zeiss rifle scopes.

It's your rifle and you should customize it to your liking. Enjoy and don't forget to share your experiences with your new .338 Lap Mag. I'm curious myself, since I'm also interested in moving up to a .338 one of these days.

Because he wants one and it was a free country last I heard. Kind of.

Do you handload Partyguy? If you don't, now may be a good time to start. You'd get to shoot that baby a lot more that's for sure. Congrats. Show us a pic of that thing.

Here's some info on the .338

If you want to get into a .338 magnum for cheaper still, the .338 RUM offers almost identical ballistics.

Herb,
When was the last time you saw a 300 smk loaded from the factory in a 338 rum?

But the 338's are really a handloaders cartridge anyway, so they take about the same amount of powder, same primer, same bullet. The only cost savings is in the brass, but I would be willing to be the lapua brass will last quite a few more firings than the remington. So really it all comes out in a wash.

The only advantage I see with the rum is the boltface.

That's been my thought for a long time. Much cheaper brass. Might not be able to load it as hot as a .338 Lapua though. I would think the .300 RUM would be even better.
