all my years i've been deer hunting with a remington 7400 chambered in 30-06. it was a gun my dad bought me when i was young but now someone else is using it. pretty much my whole hunting party of 20+ hunters use this rifle. last year i didn't use it because i bought a new ar15 and used that instead. well i didn't get to shoot any deer with the ar15, just bad luck but that is another story. at a local gun shop they have the model 740 for about $125 and the 7400 model for $475 both in excellent condition. i understand the 740 model is the older model but how do they compare? what a price difference! with my experience and along with other hunters the model 7400 jams regularly and doesn't seem to like fast rapid fire. i've read that it has something to do with the internals like a weak recoil spring or something but the new remy semi auto's are a lot better. i still love the model 7400 because it was the gun i grew up with and am looking forward to getting my own but is it worth getting the 740?

i tried google searching and found some pump style and mixed pix, the 740 is not a pump is it? i don't think i want a pump.

Some are fine, some are not. It doesn't much matter if it is a 740 or a 7400 (or a 742).

The 750 is the current semi-auto model, the pump model is the 760.

If you want reliability, the pump is a step above. I had a 740 that was very reliable with all kinds of ammunition, others have not been so lucky.

Love 'em or hate 'em.

the pump is the reliable one of the olders; the 740 series semi auto, had a problem with the receiver rails wearing out, the 7400's were supposed to have that problem fixed.

A gun (740) that old is ripe for chamber cancer; probably has it. My wife's has it. It rests permanently in the closet now. It was particularly common in the 30-06's. I would pass on the 740 unless they let you take it ouit and shoot it. Also they were notoriously inaccurate.

Do not waste money on the 740, the 7400 is much more reliable. There are
differences in the lugs and receivers. Don't buy as used one without some sort of guarantee that it shoots and functions ok. Then make sure it is clean and dry and lubed after hunting. In really cold temps use synthetic or dry lube
and you should have a great rifle.

wow, maybe i should save up for the newer models. $125 doesn't sound right for a good gun of that class. i remember my 7400 being over $500 used when we first got it. i guess i'll pass. thanks.

For $125.00 if it was in any kind of shape at all I would buy it. If I remember correctly the older Remington 740 742 have several small locking lugs on the bolt which wore out the inside of the receiver on some guns. The 7400 and newer Remingtons models have (4) larger locking lugs and the receivers seem to hold up better. A quick search on Google will lead to sites which go into greater detail.

Send me the phone number of the pawn shop I'm interested in the 740.

For $125, if it looks good at all (no rust, bore not pitted, nice wood and metal, sights OK), the worst case is you have a single-shot that needs the muzzle re-crowned.

Look at the rails inside the receiver. They are pretty thin and can get beat-up. If they are rough, there is not much to grind down for repair.

I have owned a model 7400 in .270 for years, in fact it is my favorite deer hunting rifle, and I have never had a jam or any sort of problem with it. I hope I did not just jinx myself. :)

Thank you. If they still have it they will owe you a finders fee because I will purchase it.
