Remington 7400 Question

With a couple of million sold someone out there must like the 740/742/7400/750 series. I certainly like my 7400 in .308. Can't ask for more in a hunting rifle for non-lethal game, IMHO. Like it so much that I just ordered the 750 stock with the Monte Carlo comb and R3 butt-pad as a bolt-on replacement. Great rifle out to max range any of us 'average' hunters should be shooting at an animal (<400yd).

I had two issues with my 7400 before I sold it.

Neither of which were breakages or malfunctions (using factory magazine).

First issue was vertical stringing of groups.
Significant variation up-and-down. Proabably a good 4 MOA depending on how hot.

Second issue was corrosion in the gas system.
I live in a humid environment. Unless I removed the forearm, and cleaned the gas system meticulously after each outing, there would be surface rust on the gas system parts in almost no time.

The 7400 is a "hunting gun."
I'd just as soon have a lighter, and equally accurate, and MUCH easier to maintain bolt gun for shooting deer.

The 7400 is, at best, a mediocre choice as a "battle rifle."

I guess I am really lucky. My 7400 has jammed once in the 5 years I have owned it. (military AP, bullet wasn't seated far enough). It been accurate until it has more than 10 rounds run though in rapid succession. I picked up 2 eagle mags for it, I followed the direction that came with the mags and they have never jammed. I didn't like the plastic factory FCG with the J lock so I swapped in one from a 740 woodsmater that is made of metal. To finish the swap the 7400 hammer, disconnector, and mag release had to be swapped to the older FCG. I like the rifle except the concussion is a little much from an 18.5" barrel. Supposedly as long the chamber is religiously cleaned and oiled to prevent corrosion these last forever. Its no FAL or AK but it does what its supposed to.

I've had a few, buy new and keep it clean and dry after you use it. The older ones as mentioned had receiver issues and commonly not kept clean and dry after use. Some shoot pretty well, but avoid military surplus ammo
as much of it is corrosive. Oh some magazines don't work well in some guns.
