Hi guys, its me again. Iwas wondering what you guys think about the remington 7400. I know bolt actions are the most accurate, but what do you guys think about this gun for accurace and lasting quality? I am starting to reload and a friend of mine said that the rock chucker press is the only way to go. does the press really matter or is the dies more important. is the rock chucker really better than the lees? thanks again. any info will be helpful

You are going to need a decent press-doesn't have to be a rock chucker, but something reasonably straight and fairly sturdy. As you are reloading for an autoloader, you will need to full length resize the brass.

Dies and press are pretty important. You might get away with one of the cheaper Lee single stage presses, but if you know that you like reloading already, why not go to a sturdy cast iron press and not look back?

Accuracy is generally between 1 and 2 inches @ 100 yards. Those Remingtons aren't the do all or end all of sporting autoloaders, but they have accuracy enough to take game at fairly good distances. Properly prepared reloads will help that.

I've got the carbine (18.5"bbl) in 06. 1"@100yards with handloads. I've hunted with it for about 15 years (since they first came out in that length). Not one cent into repairs. Some people say they are not good for assault rifle duty because the hammer metal is too soft to take tens of thousands of rounds. The hammer is easy to replace if that is so.

My dad has had the longer barreled one (26"?) about twice as long as I've had mine. Never a problem with his that I am aware.

They're smooth shooters recoil-wise. Only drawback that I'm aware of is so many people want to borrow it for their hunts.

I've only ever used one press but I've used lots of different dies. I think you'll find accuracy dependant on your skills. Brass prep, weighing, measuring, componant selection, and sorting are among the keys to minimizing variation.

They're pretty much ok for a non-military design.

You can get better, in the form of a BAR, but not for anything resembling the Remington's price. They look a little cheap on the inside, but that doesn't hurt anything.

We talk about 'em a lot, really. These are all 7400/semi-auto specific:
