I inherited my Grandfathers old Remington 760 30-06 deer rifle. In the process of cleaning this rifle up I would like to pull it completely apart.

The two links below state that I have to rotate the "Action Tube" by putting a center punch or something similar through the holes and twisting. I think I'm doing this correctly, but am having no luck. I have bent two screw drivers and snapped two allen wrenches (don't have a punch around) while trying to twist the tube off. Am I doing things correctly? I would hate to destroy the rifle.

Some of the 760's that I have taken down have been very tough at the level of disasembly that you are at. Try to keep some penetrating oil on the contact area and keep working on it. A good drift punch that fits the whole real close is best.

Thanks guys. I was able to go a slightly different route. I pulled off the buttstock/grip and then removed the trigger/FCG assembly. This left the forearm and bolt/pump unit still in place. I used up about a half a can of break cleaner to really blast out the grease, dirt and oil build up. With the buttstock removed, it all drained out a little hole in the back. Had to keep working the action while spraying to get rid of the chunks of gunk that had built up over 40 years. Granddad really hated to take apart the rifle and clean it. He just kept putting a few more drops of oil on it each year. Now the inside is squeaky clean and I won't have to remove the action tube.
