I'm going to look at an old Rem 760 in 30-06 on Saturday. Priced right and has a scope and mount.

Guy describes it in good working order, no rust, although the buttstock has been "modified" with an additional piece of wood for longer LOP or some such thing.

Sounds like the old 760 with the big "shotgun" type forend.

Anyone have experience with these? I'd been looking for a newer model, but they just bring too much $ for my taste.

Are there any problems to look out for in the old model 760's? Is it worth the extra $ to get a new or newer model 7600?

Thanks in advance.

The 760 is a hardy and well-designed slide action (made for 28 years and over 1 mil produced). It may actually have advantages over the 7600 in that the 760 uses more locking lugs and provides an excellent bolt lock that gives it a great reputation for accuracy. Get barrel stamp info off the left side of the barrel near the receiver if you can and do a web search for 'remington 760 assembly codes' and you can pinpoint its age. Have one in 30'06 and like it a lot; I happened into a first-year model ('52) and it's still solid and accurate. Just make sure the action will lock with a firm pump. Enjoy!

Ditto what Col. Plink said. I just spent a couple of months looking for a good second-hand 760 in .308. I could have bought a new one, but my (albeit limited) research suggested that the 760 is a better design than the newer 7600.
