Had to replace the magazine latch on a Remington 760 Gamemaster (dating to around 1955) in 270 Win, The original (on the left) had a “5” stamped on it. Lots of Googling, and asking what the numbers meant, I couldn’t find a definitive answer. The store that I bought the replacement from, who has seen many of these with various numbers, had compared them and could not discern a difference in function. Since I had a 5, I figured it was safest to get another 5, even though it seemed to be more rare to find one stamped with 5. Anyway, when it arrived, there were noticeable differences; angled at the bottom right, reinforcement by the hole seems to be longer. The new one functions just fine with the original magazine and all of the other magazines that I have for it. Just thought I’d put it out there, and this is speculation on my part, that the other latch numbers would also work if you have to replace one since even matching numbers don’t mean that they will be the same. I mention this, because I waited a long time to find one stamped with a 5, when I probably could have ordered an early model latch stamped with any number.
