Most don't realize that a 870 with a 18.5" barrel has a 7+1 capability with the right tube extension while still using the extra long factory spring and factory follower. The mag tube still has little room to spare when loaded with 7 shells. I custom fitted one of my tube extensions to be even with the muzzle. The round count in the 870 18.5" barrel shotguns are limited by the factory tube extension design. The same tube extension can be fitted for the 20", 21" barrel shotguns giving them 8+1 capacity. I am not sure it will give the 20" barrel 8+1 capacity because I haven't tried yet but it should. I know it will on the 21" barrel 870. This tube extension will also work on a 11-87 and the 1100. The tube extension on the 11-87P extends past the barrel 1/2" and you only get 6+1 capacity. Why not have a tube extension that extends past the barrel the same length but gives you 7+1 capacity or one that is even with the muzzle.

Here is a picture of the factory 870 extension showing why the round count is limited to 6+1 capacity. The indented ring and the narrow part of the tube end doesn't allow the follower to pass.

This is a New 870 Express HD 18.5" barrel with the new long fore end Model # 5077. It is nice looking shotgun. The pictures show the 870 Express 18.5" barrel fitted with a 7+1 capacity tube extension. I think that tube extensions look best when they are even with the muzzle. It gives the shotgun a nice squared up appearance. There is nothing like a nice custom fit. Some will say it needs a mag tube clamp and I say one can be installed if you feel the need, just not the factory one. This extension will not loosen because it has ridges cut in the base bottom that engages the dent ball on the locking lug. I like the looks of the new extended fore end. It has a semi auto look. The heat shield is a add on.
