I have a new 870 with the 7 shot magazine tube, or at least I thought it was. The mag only seems willing to take 6 rounds, so is the "7 rounds" really meaning "6 + 1".

If I line up 7 rounds, there barely seems to be room for them in the mag with the space required for a spring and follower.

Am I missing something here?

New to pumps, any advice appreciated.

Thanks

My 870 with a 20" barrel and a 7+1 tube, the magazine extends slightly past the barrel. You have a pic?

18" barrel = 6rd capacity mag - 6+1 or 7-shots total
20" barrel = 7rd capacity mag - 7+1 or 8-shots total

This is GENERALLY true on the 870.

It's an 18 inch version, photos attached.

How many should it take?

An 18" 870 with a magazine extension flush with the muzzle will hold six in the tube and one in the chamber. "7 shot" means "6 + 1"

I have the same shotgun

The 870 you have will only hold 6 rounds. I have the same gun, but with the REM choke which extends the length of the barrel. I have already placed a 3 round extension for a total of 7 in the tube and 1 in the chamber.

You have a great shotgun.

You can buy 3 shot extensions that sit flush with the 18 1/2" barrel.

Does anyone know why the Mossberg 590 with a 20" barrel can hold 8+1 while the 20" 870 can only hold 7+1? I'm pretty sure the mag on the 590 doesn't extend past the muzzle.

870's with 18" barrels can hold 8+1

I guess if you put on a mag extension that protrudes 5" beyond the muzzle they will (or modify it to feed from a box magazine, which I have also seen).

I have an 870 express synthetic with an 18.5" barrel. Remington calls it a 7 shot and it only hold 6+1. Trust me I've tried to cram another one in there and it won't go :D

Nope, flush with a 18 1/2" barrel :D

Thanks dasanii,

The link says you can do 7+1 in an 18.5", which I believe as there is definintely still play in the spring with 6 in the tube. I don't see how it could be 8+1 and still be flush though, unless you had a 20" barrel.

I am starting to think the stock remington extension is a bad design:

First, it limits capacity. Second, the spring often hangs up on that dimple for the clamp screw before 6 rounds are loaded, requiring you to unload and reload a shell before you can fill it up. Third, you have to take off the camp to field strip the gun and I find it rubs off the finish if you can't fit it back on in exactly the right place.

That right there is the one and only complaint that I have with my 870...

Can you guys recommend a sling to go with the Rem870 pictured above? I've got one with the 6+1 extension and tried a basic 1.25" web sling but it was too short (I guess Allen figured the gun to have the swivel on the original magazine location).

Thanks!
