I have an old 870 wingmaster, 2-3/4" chamber, that was my uncle's police shotgun. I'm shooting skeet I wanting to a 26" barrel. Will a 26" barrel with a 3" chamber fit?

It should fit with no trouble.

But since you still have a 2 3/4" receiver, you'll still need to shoot 2 3/4" shells even with a 3" chamber in the barrel.

Yes, a 26" barrel with 3" chamber will fit. As Fred said, the barrel may be able to use 3" shells, but the receiver, well actually the ejector, is set up for 2 3/4" shells. In order to use 3" shells, the ejector must be set back (simply order a 3" ejector, and rivets) and knock the old rivets out, put in the new ejector, re-rivet, polish and blue.

Thanks guys, I'm realizing the cost on a new barrel other than a 18" cost as much as a good used 870. It might be cheaper to buy another 870, but how to sneak that past my wife is another problem.

You aren't looking in the right places for a barrel. Even eBay has them now. Especially the older 2-3/4" chambered fixed choke barrels are pretty cheap, and Imp. Cyl. will work fine for Skeet. And not that you asked, but I have converted several older Wingmasters to 3", and repaired broken ejector springs on some others, and haven't changed a rivet or had to refinish a receiver yet.

At one time I owned two 870's, one magnum in 3" and one in standard 2-3/4". The 2-3/4" gun had a shorter in length ejection port and I would be skeptical that a 3" shell would reliably clear the ejection port even if the 3" ejector was installed. Didn't try it so I won't swear to it but it looked like it could be a problem.
