Used to hear a lot of comments on the 870 Express's matte blue finish and the ease with which it rusted. Has this improved in recent years or is it still the same?

I have a pile of those critters and never noted any rust problems. I have one hanging on my wall (loaded and ready to rock) and my gripe is that dust collects and is harder to wipe clean than with the WingMaster (smooth) finish.

I've seen them rust on the shelf at Dick's Sporting goods NIB, plus the one I have is rusting alot easier than my other guns which aren't rusting.

COVERED in rust after a drizzly morning duck hunting. other than that haven't had too many problems with it :D

(p.s. does fine steel wool do a good job at taking off the rust?)

Got 2, brother has 2. Never had any rust on any of them. Never seen one with rust on it. Read about it on the internet.

Bought a used 870 w/ all black finish. It has rust spots like fingerprints on one side of the receiver and 3 or 4 rust spots on the end of the tube extension. Plan to steel wool it smooth and then spray with Krylon Camo black [fusion]. Same paint that is used to camo a gun. May scratch but then just a fresh coat of paint.

Mine is a couple years old... 25077 (HD) model. No rust issues. Sat through a couple very hot and humid NC summers, has had rain on it, and all I do is clean it when I get to the house. Light coat of Hoppe's oil on the metal is all I do.

I never saw a rust problem with my dad's... he used his for 15 years or so. Granted, we didn't duck hunt but we did a lot of upland bird hunting and turkey.

I treat the Express guns just like any other gun. I lightly wipe down all metal surfaces with a light coat of oil from time to time. Always when I return from hunting or shooting. I actually think the textured finish holds the oil on the surface better than a polished finish. Never had the slightest issue.

I could see if someone with sweaty hands handled one with no protective coating of oil it could leave rusty fingerprints behind.

But even if a little surface rust did appear, I certainly wouldn't care. It is a working gun. I use it instead of my more expensive guns just in case I actually do have to use it as a boat paddle. A thin film of surface rust will wipe right off with no ill effects at all.

I had a bit of rusting when I first got it and took it out into the marsh. I ended taking the stock and forend off and sprayed it all down with some gun oil rust preventative stuff and wrapped it all up with some plastic wrap for a day or so.
Seemed that the finish and the vent rib areas soaked it all in pretty good. Never had a rust issue since then. Just wipe everything down after every use.
