I just bought a used Remington 870 SP in 98% condition for $265.00.

It is stamped "870 magnum" on the receiver, but has a black finish like the express rater than a parkerized finish. Also I noticed while cleaning it that it has the dimpled magazine tube.

I'm not familiar with this version, but it doesn't seem to be made as well as my old vintage 870.

Am I going to have potential rust problems like on the express?

How good a shotgun do I have here?

The 870 express was made to compete with the mossberg 500 and other cheaply made shotguns.

The shotgun you have is still an 870, just not as pretty as the old ones. The finish they used cost less money, but I dont think you will have any problems with rust. I have 2 and I have never had a problems.

It is still going to be dead reliable, and the dimples were just a new way to retain the magazine spring. If you want to put on a magazine extension, then you will have to dremel or drill them out. I did this with mine, and it worked just fine.

You still have a great shotgun, dispite the looks of it.

In order to limit any potential corrosion problems, buy a spray can of CLP Breakfree.

Field strip the gun per the owner's manual, and spray all the metal, inside and out, until it's dripping wet.
Allow to soak for 20 minutes or so, then wipe off the excess and put it back together.

Every time you handle or use the gun, wipe it off with more CLP on a patch or a clean, soft toothbrush.

This will keep a layer of rust preventing Teflon on all the metal and you should have no rust problems.

What I was hoping to find out, was if Remington uses the same type of matt black finish on the SP as it does the express.

The 870SPs I remember seeing were parkerized/phosphate finished, as opposed to the matte blue of the Express guns. The SP should have a much more durable finish...

To find out what type of finish your SP has, ask Remington.
On their web site they have an excellent question system.
Just post your question, and they'll get back to you.

It is most likely a bead blasted blued finish. The Wingmaster and Police come either in blued or Parkerized.
