Not my first 870, nor my first wingmaster, but this is the first time I've ever did any kind of modding to one. So I got quite a deal on a old wingmaster that came with two barrels, one vented rib with a rem choke and a old round barrel at 30inches with a full choke. So naturally I went out and got a Remington factory mag tube extension, and cut the old barrel to 18 1/4 inches. The spring for the extension seems very long and it only holds six 2 3/4's shells...Does this sound right? Or do I need to cut the spring a little?

The spring that comes with the mag extension is designed specifically for it. I would not mess with it.

It could be that, like a lot of new springs, it is just a bit stiff, but, considering the 18.25 inch barrel length, that sounds about right. The basic magazine only holds four (usually).

Sounds right to me. Before you put that thing on there it held 4. After you added it, you loaded in 5 1/2" of ammo (if my math is right) plus you need room for that coiled and compressed spring and follower, etc. Measure the length of the extension, then subtract 5 1/2" for the ammo, and think about the spring all stacked up in there too and it will make sense.

Yes, it is a 2 shot extension so your capacity is now 6 + 1 in chamber. Do not cut the spring as it is correct for that extension.

Thanks guys, I was thinking at least one more could fit but I wont mess with it.

I just bought a new extention for my Mossberg 590. It has an 18.5" barrel and the extention brings the mag tube flush with the end of the barrel. I had to cut the spring some to get 7 shells in the tube but now it does.

Some manufactures make extension that come with one size springs that the end use has to cut. Remington does not. The Remington 2 and 3 Shot extension both come with the Extended Magazine spring part #F94645, same spring for both and it should not be cut down.

Listen to this guy. He knows what he's talking about.

question: did you remove the two retainer "tabs" inside your factory tube? This should be done or you wont get the correct capacity because the spring and follower cant compress all the way past them and into the extension.

I did the exact same extension on an 870 mag and had to remove those from the tube. i heard some may not have had these tabs. you should check yours.

The OP said he had an OLD Wingmaster, and as such those shotguns did not have the tabs.

Been there, done that with a couple of Choate extensions many years ago.

And his 2nd pic looks like an old Remington factory riot gun 2-shot extension, not a Choate, so it should run just fine, except:

If it truly is an old Wingmaster it will have a non-slotted chromed shell lifter. I suggest replacing it with a newer slotted lifter in case the OP short-strokes the gun and finds himself with an empty hull back in the chamber and a live shell in the lifter and under the bolt, and nothing will actuate until the user can move (with a slim key or a slim screwdriver) the live shell back into the magazine tube past the shell stops using that slot.

I shot an 870 Wingmaster 26" IC choke vent rib for years, long ago starting as a teen, for years on the skeet range, and I am 64. IMO, best pump shotgun ever made.

Sorry, sir,

I had to do this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDo3-oS4JfI

That has nothing to do with mag extensions with old Wingmasters.

All it showed was how to remove the factory indents in the magazine tube with the newer junker Remingtons.

It did not address adding a mag extension to an old Wingmaster.

I stand by my previous post.
